Re: Headlight pattern insufficient

Absolutely check the position of the bulb in the reflector, it needs to be in the right place in relation to the reflector to work correctly, and be sure the lens is in the proper position as well. Both will drastically effect the output, but it will never be sufficient for night time on unlit roads...

See Ya Later

Gentlemen, It's been GRAND, but tomorrow afternoon I must take my leave of you all. I am turning Betty over to the dealer and riding away on a new ST1300. After my brief 12 years of summer touring, it seems time to make the move to a bike more dedicated to touring, as that is 90% of my miles. The R ...

Re: is 79,000 miles too many?

My thinking lies closer to the CycleRob camp then the Challey....probably the most pertinent question is: How much will you ride it it? How many miles per year will you actually put on it? Are you a long distance tourer? A once a summer long tripper? Every weekend for as long as you can stand it? A ...

An article about truckers using on board computers while driving. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/28/technology/28truckers.html?_r=1&th&emc=th I have been thinking lately, what with all the talk about texting while driving, that it sure would be nice to have another study done about motorcycl...

Re: Leaky oil fill plug

yea. that is too early to have to replace the whole thing, you just need a new o-ring. the whole thing can be replaced for under $10 though; filler pipe, o-ring, oil cover lid, o-ring.. http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=47984 I did the metal one simply for looks being as...

Re: BMW Touring Windshied vs. Cee Bailey vs. Parabellum

I have a Cee Bailey 22" clear (old style) for sale. the post is in buy/sell forum from last July (btw the low seat was sold). It would have been my second one if I had mounted it. I like it ok, but have only had smaller ones on the bike, and never had any BMW or Parabellums, so I cannot speak a...

Re: Leaky oil fill plug

how many miles on the bike? At some point you have to replace the plug and it's insert, as they warp or something with age, and even new gaskets don't fix the problem (at least that is what happened to me, and what I remember others saying). I put a metal one from A & S in this season, so at aro...

Re: 72k Mile Service Results

yep. agreed. sounds exactly like what I would have said about my 72k service. But add a fuel filter. At my first 24k service, when I went to pick the bike up at the dealer, I asked him why he had not replaced the fuel filter as the book calls for. He said duh, I don't know. That is when I started th...

Re: ABS info

I have a friend in Nashville who purchased a 2002 R1150RT 2 years ago. It had 60000 miles on it. The service records concerning the ABS brakes were not good, it was hard to tell for sure but it looked like the guy had only changed the brake fluid once at 42000 miles, but my friend bought it anyways ...

Re: Sintered vs. Organic brake pads

(I have ABS) this doesn't say much, and I really know nothing about brakes except how to check the wear indicators, but in support of your decision to use the sintered pads this may be somewhat useful.... I have a pre October 2002. I had to replace the rear pads at my 24k service. I am now at 90k an...

Re: Not the usual tire discussion

John, I know you got yours but for others who might be interested: As we know everybody gets different results but I will hit 90k miles on my way to work today and good mileage has always been at the top of my list of desired traits in a tire, followed by wet weather handling, and so far I have had ...

um yes, they do seem to be making some progress in this area. http://www.vari-lite.com/index.php?src=forms&ref=VLX_Info I'm trying to find a place to mount this bad boy, but first I have to get my 120v source going, and then I have to rob a bank to get the $10k or so that one costs. Good news is...

Re: soft bag alternative to BMW hard cases?

The answer is yes. I like the MotoPak bags from Canada. The attachment method is not slick and easy like the system case is, and so I find myself adjusting to the fact that I can't just lift them off and carry them into the motel or the office. It just means they stay on the bike a lot, which is fin...

Re: Rec'd. my Rick Mayer Seat

I love mine. Really, really comfortable, made a huge difference to my long distance riding comfort level. I got it for the 2006 season, it was $322 to rebuild the front and recover the rear, prices are higher now, but I think for a custom built seat it is still the least expensive option out there. ...

Done. I got home last night after riding a bit less then 9 hours from Albuquerque. I went thru Santa Fe and up on US 285 to home, a distance of 432 miles. The ride duplicated the last leg of one that I had taken back in May of 2002, when I did a ride to the north rim of the Grand Canyon and back jus...

Interesting. I just called John at Sandia BMW to check on how my ignition coil replacement was going as I have a flight booked down to Albequerque this evening to go and pick it up. He says it turns out it was the Hall Sensor, the coil is actually ok. And they are just now putting it back together, ...

Re: VALUE COVER GASKET

I replaced mine at 66000, they were beginning to feel a bit hard, but I have never had a leak. The plastic oil fill plug will go bad eventually, and I recommend changing that out for either a new one or a metal one (A&S has 'em), mine started leaking at around 75000 miles, but I think others hav...
