I joined in '09. I've been through a fair few bikes since my R12R, but in hindsight it was probably the one I should have kept... oh well.
Good to see Deilenberger still kicking around on here. You're a fixture, man lol.

Re: Front wheel bearings?
I've been doing some research on this lately as there are several cases of F800GS bikes with less than stellar wheel bearing longevity. Not to mention the head race bearings. Several people have documented a rather disturbing lack of grease (in at least one case - almost none!) in the sealed bearing...

Re: F800GS steering stem bearing replacement
I've had to replace my steering head bearings twice, once at 38000km - and again at 48000 km :? . (2010 F800GS) I don't know what the issue is, but the second one was free, as I was pretty choked. Seems like there should be a replacement bearing and /or weather seal issued by BMW, that kind of "...

Re: F800GT buyers?
I couldn't see why a 90 hp bike needs traction control, but what do I know? I have an F800GS, and in the rain on cold days I've broken the rear loose several times on slippery tar snakes while merging onto the highway. ESA would have been nice then, I still have pinch marks on my seat  I'm rea...

Re: F800GS Opinion
55,000 km later and I'm still pretty happy. I've only had one issue, which is the steering head bearings. I replaced them at 38,000km, and then they went south again at about 50,000. That's just wrong, and the dealer agreed, so they were replaced under "good will" warranty. Other than that...

I'm pretty content with my 2010 F8GS too, just hit 40,000km and have not had a single problem. Valve specs were good, no issues at all.
Happy camper.

It's nice to see this is finally happening! Even though I am on a different steed now, I like to pop in once in awhile and see what's up with you guys. This was a pleasant surprise, and I'll follow this with interest. Good on Cee Bailey's for giving it the effort.

Re: F800GS seat surgery
Sorry John - obviously I haven't been back here for awhile...
I don't know what the "standing pad mod" is. The cover is stretchy (not sticky), so even with the material significantly reduced underneath, the fabric still pulls taut and looks fine.

F800GS seat surgery
I decided to try and make my ass a little happier and dish out the stock seat. Here's a link to my posting on ADV. All in all, I'd call it a success. Try it!

Re: Road salt
I read somewhere that just rinsing salt off does more harm than good. I think you're not supposed to use warm water to rinse salt off. I heard that too, whatever. In the time it takes to rinse the salt off, how much more corrosion can warm water cause? I dunno. I ride throughout the winter and agre...

Re: Key Stuck In Ignition
I had the same issue with my 12R, and now with an F8GS. Just bad design (which is why it was used on multiple models??????). The graphite lube helps, and so does keeping the barrel covered as much as possible. I had a little plastic flap attached with zip ties for awhile, until it abandoned ship on ...

Re: Steering dampener-ectomy
Well, I ran without mine right up to the day I sold it with never a problem and rode every day of the year with a 20" Cee Baileys attached. I guess the factory installed it for a reason but I can say it was never an issue for me. YMMV, do what makes you comfortable.
