Re: Hangin It Up

Ladies and Gentlemen - .........Most likely my next ride will be an electric one. Just gotta try something without all those parts! Bill in San Francisco Uhhh...yeah well....good luck with that. But please don't dam up more of our rivers to charge it and polute our landfills with your worn out batt...

Hangin It Up

Ladies and Gentlemen - This is most likely my last post with all you good folks. My 2007 silver R12R is now just a pile of parts. Having gotten totaled by a cager, I've taken it all down, which was an interesting exercise, and I'm eager to sell it all off so I can finally reclaim my half of the gara...

Re: Engine Removal Question

Sorry to hear of a crash, hope all is well. Keith Thanks Keith. Bike slid 20 feet into a light pole: bent forks, telelever arm, and frame. I slid 13 feet in an Atlantis 4 suit and had a hairline crack in my pelvis and sore ribs. All is well now. Smart Car cager whipped a left turn from the lane to ...

Re: Engine Removal Question

Ah... that may well be: the missing Torx bolts. The bike was in a wreck and at a dealer's for a month while insurance strung me along. Their shop did an estimate (total loss) and removed the crash bars (which didn't work!) and I forgot that they were mounted at those stub points. Well, at lea...

Engine Removal Question

I want to remove the engine. No, you can't ask me why! I'm really stumped by the bottom frame attachments: Shining my flashlight in the opening, all I can see is a blind tube that's threaded on the inside. I've never seen any "fastener" like this and have zero idea how to attack it. Any id...

Re: Why you should always wear protective gear & clean under

Having totaled my R12R and broken a rib, I can highly recommend an abdominal binder. I found a black one at Walgreens for about $30. After stretching around the rib cage, the velcro fastens the binder initially; then a second, stretchy piece fastens from the other direction to give a lot of support ...

Re: leather vs textile jacket

I have the Atlantis 4 WATERPROOF leather armored suit. Thick, very comfortable, pricey, but so is skin. Back in October, I was hit my an illegally turning cager and slid 13 feet across the asphalt, which ground holes through the cordura nylon of my Kriega backpack. The jacket and pants had some slig...

You may get some good information from this series of reviews: http://www.webbikeworld.com/Reviewed-motorcycle-products/user-reports/roof-boxer.htm Here's a quote that has me bypassing this helmet: "I read that during a recent accident the boxer's chin bar opened up after first impact and I tot...

Re: Shock absorber wear ???

Most shock gurus I've talked to or read say somewhere in the vicinity of 25K miles is the usual service life. I am trying to understand this. I can see that there is more of that seesawing motion on a motorcycle, and four points of suspension on a car make for a more even distribution, causing an i...

Re: Shock absorber wear ???

I was never a fan of the stock shocks even when new and by 25K miles (and more of those miles than I'd like were in the potholes of San Francisco), they didn't feel sloppy but just harsh. About as inviting as a wet toilet seat. I switched to a set of Wilburs and didn't look back. Most shock gurus I'...

Re: The new BMW R 1200 R. The new BMW R 1200 R Classic.

Thought I'd share my unique perspective. As posted elsewhere, a month ago a cager made a left turn from the lane to my right and I ended up doing the asphalt slide about 20 feet. The bike hit a curb and then a light post. Front wheel, forks, telelever and bent frame, instrument cluster, etc. etc. co...

Re: Top box or side cases?

It's just not possible to do the miles and miles of lanesplitting on I-880 with side cases attached, though, so they stay home during the week. Same here. They've left us with very narrow lanes on the 405 and 101 here in LA. Since the side cases are not wider than the handlebars, exactly how do the...

Re: Top box or side cases?

I have both but use the top case only on longer trips. And accessory for the top case is a pad that passengers can lean against. No problem in handling as long as weight is within limits. Helmet or clothing: no problem. I wouldn't load it up with lead shot, however! Passengers haven't complained abo...

Re: Milled lever install

Dumb question, Bill, but ... have you tried moving the clutch lever from its original position? No dumb questions and yes, I have twiddled the dial which helped some. It's only some days that my hands bother me... arthritis from having all the metacarpals in both hands broken during a bicycle accid...

Re: Bridgestone tires

I'm getting 16K miles out of the PR2's, mostly commuting miles. Have another set on order. I find their wet traction superb and they've never slipped in the twisties, but my chicken stripe is about 1/2". I ran a set of BT-021's which were OK, but I only got 6500 miles out of them, slightly more...

Re: Milled lever install

Thanks, Bill, for a clear write-up and good photos. I'm not at all interested getting these levers based on their looks (although they are beautifully milled), but what DOES interest me very much is your statement that they are easier to pull and keep pulled in. I drive my R12R in San Francisco traf...

Re: HID vs. Auxilliary lighting

I chose to go with aux. lights to create more daytime visibility from the resulting triangle of three light sources, as well as more useful light on the ground at night. But I also wanted to get the most light per watt of juice used and so went with converting Hella FF50's to HID. Having removed the...
