Re: Alternator Belt Replacement

No good video of the belt install but here is a short clip of the belt cover install. Removal would just be the opposite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAC7f-S0pDo Here is a photo of the old alternator belt being removed using a cut up Coke can. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5220/5403739076_f974e7...

Re: Alternator Belt Replacement

It took three people, one bumping the rear wheel, and two holding the belt onto the pulley, but the alt belt is now on. That was a PITA. The old belt looked fine at 31K. Getting the plastic alt belt cover off was a PITA too. Had to pull the oil cooler out as far as possible by unfastening the metal ...

Re: Alternator Belt Replacement

What method did you use to get the new belt on? I tried both JVB methods: holding the new belt while bumping the rear tire & using a large wrench to spin the bottom pulley. Problem with the R1200R is that the oil cooler is in the way being right in front of the belt. Tough to get a wrench in the...

Alternator Belt Replacement

Has anyone replaced their alternator belt? I just did my 30k service and now need to change the alt belt. I know there is a special tool BMW sells for this but the Jim VonBaden method of spinning the pulley with a large wrench looks pretty easy. He did this on a GSA though, so I'm wondering if there...

If you need someone to ride it during the summer, I suppose I could make that sacrifice. :D

Re: Mirror distortion

I haven't had that problem and haven't heard anyone else mention it. Not sure if it's a warranty item but guess it doesn't hurt to ask. A bunch of us replaced the round mickey mouse mirrors with the more oblong mirrors from the f800gs. They are a noticeable improvement over the stock mirrors imho. A...

Re: 2011's being advertised by BMW-Motorrad USA..

That's awesome. I'm amazed at how out of touch the dealers can be with product releases. I believe I'd mentioned "Dealer Blather".. the compulsive need of dealer employees to prove they know more then you, even when they are totally ignorant. Yeah, in this case the sales guy actually snat...

Re: Coldest Temperature you've ridden you motorcycle in?

This is the coldest I've ridden in. Rode through a nice snow shower while in King's Canyon. I was comfortable with an electric vest and grips running. Only problem was my thumbs. I had to keep stopping to warm them up. I need to get GS hand guards installed. :D http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3435/39...

Re: Birthday Ride

Nice review. I get down that way once in a while and ride Palomar. That's a great area to ride. Have you seen "BMW R1200R Vs. Palomar Mtn. Road"? It's one of the best-made R12R videos I've seen. From the video shooter: "This should clear up any misconceptions about BMW motorcycles be...

Re: Strange Behavior This Morning

If you're really talented, you can get it into a position where the gear display is blank. I get this often. I haven't had a false neutral yet though. I had the engine shut off once when down shifting from 2nd to 1st gear while rounding a corner. That was a bit scary but it never happened again.

Classic beemers and Sidecar Jazz

I was at a sidecar show today in Griffith Park. Some interesting classic bikes there with custom sidecars. One of the most interesting was this jazz band. They have their beemers set up to accommodate their instruments. Seems they drive around and play jazz. Pretty cool. Here is a link to a video of...

Re: f800gs mirrors for the r1200r

Oops, my bad! Soda Lake Road is the road that I took, easy flat 65mph dirt. No problem at all! I mistakenly thought you meant the road on the other side of Soda Lake, which is Elkhorn Road. It is a bit "dirtier", with some steep climbs and some dry washes, but I have driven it in my Prius...

And enjoy just looking at them as you drive. You know, mirrors are one farkle that are always in your view, and mine just continue to give me pleasure on every ride (a 350-miler yesterday, up to Atascadero, Hwy 41 to Cholame, down Bitterwater Road, then the length of Carrizo Plain on 65mph dirt, an...
