Re: another ignition coil problem

I like that idea a lot. Don't know why exactly but that sidestand switch is starting to make me nervous. Let me know what you know about how you might be thinking about doing it....."hotwire?"

Re: another ignition coil problem

Thanks Gentlemen. Both dealers claim to have checked the Hall sensor as part of their investigations, so I will cross my fingers for now on that one. And Sunbeemer, actually there are a number of things besides that that could be replaced before I am able to rule out future problems: ignition switch...

another ignition coil problem

hey, this has not been my best riding season, Some of you may be aware that I have had some major problems with the bike this summer, having spent almost $5k to replace a wiring harness, throttle bodies, and then finally an ECU, which was no doubt damaged by the catastrophic short circuit that occur...

Re: Harness update

Charlie's right. Here are some pics of mine in the shop at Holt's BMW in Athens, Ohio, where owner Kent Holt was kind enough to let me do a lot of the tear down and rebuild myself. The pictures show very similar issues. Mine was a catastrophic failure in that I was riding along just fine one moment,...

Re: Surging & poor performance -- Need Help

Bob, Bob here.... again, how many miles do you have on the bike? The other end is at the ignition coil which is underneath the large steel spine that the front shock attaches to; you have to take the tank off to get to them, I did it last weekend when I was trying to troubleshoot a problem similar t...

Re: ok, so I need a seat or?

no just the standard and "tall" is what I remember being the two options when I bought mine in '02. 31.3 inches and 32.5 inches or something like that. not a huge difference but enough to make me purchase the tall, it really was better for my 6'3" inch frame. I have a Rick Mayer as we...

Re: Let's make a list of big $ repairs

Charlie says: Can be prevented by regular inspection of the harness with particular attention paid to 2 places: The top of the harness under the fuel tank (requires tank removal but well worth the trouble) and the rear section of the harness near the cut-out on the left corner of the battery tray. ...

Re: Let's make a list of big $ repairs

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday.... Just as a point of reference, I purchased the bike in March of 2002. I figured that I would be putting 10-15 thousand miles per riding season on it, and that I wanted to keep it at least ten years. It now has 88035 miles on it. Call it 7.5 riding seas...

Re: soft bag alternative to BMW hard cases?

Thanks Charlie,

I went ahead and ordered a set of the smaller 60L bags, which is only 6L less then my two full cases when the small lids are mounted (I also have a set of large lids which adds 12L total).

At $120 shipped, what a deal!

I will let you know how they work out.

soft bag alternative to BMW hard cases?

I am getting a bit tired of my hard bags for daily riding duties (I will still use them for the long distance stuff).

Does anyone have a set of soft bags that they really like and would recommend?

Thanks,

Bob

Re: Airhead advice

Can you be happy with 50 hp, a 4-speed transmission and drum brakes? No. Your intuition as stated in your long paragraph is spot on. They are great to look at, and I suggest you buy the book "BMW Motorcycles" by Darwin Holmstrom and Brian J. Nelson for that purpose. For a second bike Boxe...

Re: Ignition coil resistance specs.

FWIW, We are talking a 2002 single spark here: I am tracking down a problem (cold starting problems, starts fine when hot, power loss on acceleration, huge power loss at 4k rpms, but not in every gear) and (in light of my recent wiring harness failure) I pulled my coil to check it's resistance setti...

In another post CycleRob writes: "The CAN-bus system power management would not allow this short to happen and the maintenance free sealed battery is very less likely to leak when tipped on it's side. Also, with the CAN-bus system there isn't that many wires!! Only just a few. I'm seeing benefi...

Call me #2. Happened 20 miles east of Gallipolis Ohio in West Virginia, on June 15 at 1pm. Cruising along nice and easy on a 2 lane country road, start of the 4th week of a 6 week trip. Suddenly smoke starts pouring out from under the tank, the horn starts blasting, and the engine shuts off. Long st...

Re: Removal of battery tray, air and fuse box

Challey, I just got back home after 6 weeks on the road. Alas, 2 of those weeks were "lost" dealing with having to replace the wiring harness when I was far away from home.... But as a result I know a few things that might be of use to you, and have some pictures of the bike in process. PM...

Re: tire tales, I need some assistance

The wrap-up. I decided to just head for Toronto early in the A.M. on Saturday. Andrew at Toronto BMW had only 1 set that would work for the R1150R in stock, some Bridgestones. So of course I said yes. I was in by 9:30 and he got me out of there by 3pm, with an oil change as well. I agree, the Dunlop...

Re: tire tales, I need some assistance

Thanks everyone for the great info. I'm in Barrie tonite (Friday), and I am going to run over to the local Honda dealer in the morning to see if they have anything, and if not I will head on down to Toronto. Whatever happens I will lose the Dunlops and go back to Metzlers or the Michelins, both of w...
