New to the R1150R

Post by motorcycle_monkey »

Hey all! I am new to the R1150R after having an R1200C for 4 years. Just bought a 2002 R1150R with ~40k on the clock yesterday. I am excited for the new style bike, as I have ridden cruisers of various forms for 20 years (I'm 34). First thing I need is a windshield, as the weather is getting cold here in CO and I ride year round. Would like to keep some wind off my hands if possible, and the wind go over my head. I am getting 2 inch risers later this week, so I can sit a little more upright. I would like to find a set of used bags, as my bike has the rails, but no bags. However, don't want to pay retail for the bags, so could live with some scuffs. I would like to also find a tool kit, since mine doesn't have one. I may replace the beak, since it doesn't have one, but, not sure yet, since I don't know if I like the look...

Any assistance finding these parts would be hugely appreciated. Also, any tips/warnings.

Cheers!

Welcome. from Ohio. About the bags, do you have a high pipe ? or low pipe ? High pipe will require the l/bag have the cutout for it. If it is low pipe or, you intend to make it so ? then a full left bag is usable . Decide what you have & or which you want, and let me know . I have some older bags just being stored .

As for the w/shield, talking function. I have & like the OEM "Touring" shield..with the Wunderlich deflector on top, I fold it down in slower traffic/warmer weather..does a nice job..but there are a bunch out there to choose from.

I also like the OEM "Touring" shield, now sold by the ZTechnik division of National Cycle as the "R1150R Tall Windshield." Not cheap, but very effective.

Thanks for the windshield recommendation and the welcome. I am originally from IA. Lived my whole life there until 2010. Love that I can ride year round here in the foothills of CO. I like the red on that bike. I had a couple of Honda Magnas and a Suzuki Intruder that were that color!

Also, I have some scratches on the tank, would love to find the right color. I thought it was maybe Atlanta Blue, but the touch up paints I am finding online show a purple color. Anyone know of a good place to get some touch up paint that is correct? Thanks.

Colorado would be a gorgeous place to ride.

Here, I ride to work until the night temp is under 32. sometimes a tad lower. has to be NO chance of ice. gets me into December. that's about all she wrote. My wife thought it was funny when she jumped in my truck, and saw my oil change sticker was from LAST august, and it was April, and I had only 1300 miles on it. LOL.

Sounds like my truck! I lived most my life in Garwin, near Marshalltown. College in Pella, then 6 years in Des Moines. You?

All, I decided on this windshield, due to the ridiculous deal it looks like I got. Says the hardware is included and it's brand new.

I bought a 2002 F-150 in late 2002. It already had 32 thousand & change on it, but it was well maintained & super clean. It now has just over 56 thousand on it . It has spent most it's life sitting in the garage . Weird thing is, it's starting to rust. My buddy used to tease me about being the only guy he knew that used Sta-Bil in his truck...LOL!

Things change though.....Arthritis is coming on pretty strong in the last year...so the truck is getting used more,....and the motorcycle less.... :(

Great. I am in Colorado Springs, CO. Thanks!

I looked, & don't really have enough to do you any good, and what I do have [is] scuffed up & no locks.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I'm thinking you can find some decent ones on the net,...maybe right here.

I thought about selling my 'good' ones [currently on my bike] but not sure yet.

Keep us posted on the whole accessorizing project, it's a great bike for all round use.

No worries. Thanks for looking Ron. I have a line on some from Esmir. Will definitely keep you all up to date on the progression of this beautiful bike.

For those interested, took some pictures on my maiden voyage out of town. Was unseasonably warm here yesterday, so had to take the afternoon off. :D
