Rear wheel play

Post by Neil »

I have some play in my rear wheel when I put the bike on the center stand and grasp the rear wheel top and bottom I can get some movement, a manual I have seems to indicate that the maximum play measured at the rim should be 1mm the bike has only traveled 25000ks and should not have worn the bearings out I would have thought, has any one felt this play and what is an acceptable amount I am thinking it would not be a cheap item to fix

I am posting a photo from a German forum:

The play should be max 0.5 mm. If the gap between the wheel and the tube (center of the photo) changes then your final drive has gone south and needs to be replaced. If the gap does not change then its only the bearing ...

Sorry to state the obvious, but are your wheel nuts properly tightened?

Hello Neil,

BMW speaks about 1mm max (back and forth travel). That translates into 0.5 mm in one direction (either back or forth) which is what I mentioned.

Exactly pull the wheel as far as it will go towards you 0 your gauge then push as far as it will go away from you total travel not to exceed 1mm
