ABS Bleed part needed

Post by towerworker »

I am looking for suggestions concerning a part necessary for bleeding the R's abs brakes. The do-it-yourseld instructions I have read use a wheel circuit filling adaptor http://users.rcn.com/dehager/service/ab ... dapter.pdf

I can easily find the funnel used. The cap that you drill for the funnel is part of an assembly sold thru BMW's parts depts. It's approx $40---not at all opposed to spending that but all I need is the small threaded(?) cap which you end up drilling and fitting the funnel to it. Does anyone know the precise size and thread measurments for the cap? Or any suggestions of something that will work as well?

I appreciate any thoughts or opinions you folks have.

Wayne,

I believe it is M18x2.5 pitch.

I have accumulated the components to make my own but have not done so yet. I bought a bolt that I intend to cut to length and center drill for the funnel. I guess I still have to find the appropriate o-ring for a proper seal.

Good luck, keep us posted.

I was thinking maybe we can unplug the vent hose (red arrow) from the cap and attach a clear hose from a separate container filled will brake fluid. Since the whole ABS module is a big electric pump, I reckon it will suck the brake fluid from the hose attached to the vent nipple.

But there is a problem, how to get rid of the air trapped under the cap before the bleeding starts?

I'm sorry I can't find it, but somebody on the net sells this already built up... I got one for Christmas. When I get home I will see if my girlfriend still has the link.

This website indicates that the thread is indeed 8x1.25:

Google "mini-stan" and you might get more info/ideas.

The guy who sold them online (http://www.DIYmoto.com) has temporarily stopped selling them. That's where I bought mine. I believe there is a slight difference in the screw size or cap configuration on certain years bikes. I think the 2004 cap fits all ABS systems, but earlier ones might not fit the newer ones. I could be wrong on that, but I recall that at the time I bought mine.

Looks like from 2003 on, the cap is the same.

I have not used mine yet, but it seems to me you could also use a correctly sized rubber stopper, like in high school chemistry class, with a hole in the middle. Might need an assortment to begin with, but probably a lot cheaper than the OEM cap.
