Doesn't seem like much of a gain for all the complexity added to the engine! I hear the HP2 valve adjustment is much more difficult due to the DOHC. I'm very happy that my 2010 R came with the "old" Hexhead engine.mattbr wrote:Now with bold new graphics, 5% more HP for the GS, torque up a whopping 3lbft !

This looks to be the same system employed on the K and F bikes as well. If it works the same then you probably could go a long way before needing any valve adjustments.dumfounded wrote:Doesn't seem like much of a gain for all the complexity added to the engine! This reminds me of the comments about how bad EFI sucked and would never work, electronic ignitions would never work... Etc. !!

Yamaha I-4's use a shim-under-bucket valve adjustment method also, and have 20,000 mile maintenance intervals. And, rarely need and adjustment regardless. This system works well.

My FJR is every 26,000 and it has never needed an adjustment yet in 30,000. So the shim under is ok. My G650XCh has not been adjusted yet in 15,000 miles of pounding a single down the road either. However, I do prefer to have a simple boxer motor that I can adjust myself....

5% does not seem like much of an increase. What is the maintenance interval on this new motor? Twin cam is it? it seems inevitable. Time marches on.

I got some BMW magazines from Germany, which talk about the models that are to receive the R1200 dohc engine: more torque, more hp, Italian sound straight from the factory. The Roadster is to be updated by summer/fall 2010. It supposedly will not only get technical upgrades, but also the design will be reworked significantly. No detail on the design was given. It was said that "it will be clear even from a distance that this is a different motorcycle".
BMW apparently also plans to go into series with the inline six cylinder concept motor, which was presented at the Milan expo. Probably we will see it in a sport and touring application.
