Re: Spark Plug Question

Before I got started changing fluids and plugs I went to the local Kawasaki dealer (close to me) and bought 2 NGK DCPR 8 EKC plugs per the Clymer manual. Good thing I did. When I pulled the secondary plugs (they were the Bosch YR 6 LDE), they were a smaller diameter than the primary plugs. Bike runs...

Spark Plug Question

I went to local BMW dealer to get 4 plugs for 2004 R1150R. They sold me 4 NGK R plugs, all BKR7EKC. I asked about that and they said BMW now specs the same plugs for upper and lower.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thx! :?

Forgot to mention I checked Amazon today and they are in stock, ready to ship. Search on PL10241 and they pop right up.

Re: Oil Filters

I use the Purolator PL10241 and order them from Amazon for $7.58 per two. Order a total of $25 and get free shipping...you can get a book DVD or CD or whatever to make up the $25. I just ordered four of the two packs to get my free shipping.

Re: Why a high-speed wobble as rear tire wears out?

For me, 7,000 miles is all I hope for out of a Metzler tire; this was true when I rode Japanese bikes as well. I've heard the Michelin Road Pilots give better mileage, but this is second hand. I do agree that tires are not the place to save money on a motorcycle.....except if you are changing your o...

Re: Age of new tire?

I have bought and ridden tires two or three years old with no problems. I go through a set of tires per year, so they're not going to age much on my bike! :D

If you're going to mount your own tire (not a big deal) you may need a compression strap of some sort to get the bead to seat.

Re: What's the best insurance deal?

Geico raised me from $400 to $1,000 last year, in Arizona. I went with Safeco and got a policy for a tad over $400 per year. Get a few quotes.... I am also told American Family is reasonable on bike insurance, especially if you are willing to put your homeowners insurance with them as well. Good luc...

Re: Starting problem....

Jeffrey, the fuel filter is inside the gas tank so it tends not to get changed too often; grades of fuels used plus luck can make a difference in the life of the filter; filling your tank at a station when the tanker is there topping off the underground tanks is A Bad Time to get gas there; all the ...

Re: Starting problem....

Jeffrey, Can you quantify how cold your mornings are, and what the daytime temps are? Might help us to diagnose the problem; but I third the sentiment on time for a new battery. I've had good luck with the Odyssey battery. Mobil One carries a 0W-40 synthetic oil; not cheap but might be good for cold...

Re: New R1150R owner

Welcome Seamripper, I think you will really enjoy your R1150R and this group. There is a lot of help here, don't hesitate to ask.

Nice day for a ride here, summers are in some ways more difficult riding than now....but that is Arizona for you. :?

MCN Sept. 2008:BMW Final Drive Failures

I assume most here know MCN stands for Motorcycle Consumer News, the 100% suscriber supported motorcycle mag with no advertising. Synopsis: The article is on pace 32, the article is 3 pages long, with diagrams of "Old Style" Paralever final drives, and EVO Paralevers. These are oilhead and...

Re: Another newbie to the R!

As to the rear box, several folks here recommended the Hepco and Becker, 42 L box with the mounting rack (which replaces the plastic part on the BMW rack perfectly), with the foam pad as part of the backrest. I am told by passengers that this is very comfortable, and it matches the BMW side cases pe...

Gas Prices and Octane

Now that gas prices are $4 or more in many places for regular, about $.50 more for high octane, does anyone have recommendations for octane for BMW R1150R? I tend to run the highest octane for around town usage but am wondering about running regular or mid level gas for highway use. I know this topi...

Re: rpm's for riding

My 1150R is quite happy at 3500 to 4000 RPM, I do have the "tall" high gear which might make a difference. 4000 RPM is an indicated 80 mph probably 75 mph per hour if I checked it against a GPS.

Re: Fire Extinguishers:changing requirements?

Thanks Naiad, yes I am primarily concerned with shop fires, the BMW holds about six gallons of gasoline so it's not like fighting a "big" fire. Our fuel here is the 10% mix most months of the year and I was uncertain how it would affect fire extinguishers. I tend to buy commercial fire ext...

Fire Extinguishers:changing requirements?

I asked this question in another thread but it got buried in political comments; let me try again. Liquid fires, like gasoline, are normally handled by a type "B" fire extinguisher. Now our fuel is changing with 10 to 15% ethanol being added. This may change the requirements of fire exting...
