Re: Oil Level sight glass

Thanks for the posts. If someone could, please, direct me to the "oil-check dance," I'll get SWMBO to help me out. An overfill should not be part of the equation, unless the dealer committed a bonehead error.

I'll post further as more information develops.

Re: Oil Level sight glass

I have not added oil since my oil change. I'm saying that the sight glass is opaque. I'm used to being able to see through the glass to the metal part behind it. Now it's as if someone painted over it. Physically, I am unable to try the things you recommend (at least not alone). To check my oil, nor...

Re: Heat Induced Oil Sight Glass & Oil Cap Failure

I have a blacked out oil sight glass, too. We were stuck in game-day traffic and SWMBO will, absolutely, not ride between cars, even if they're stopped. One point I'd like to mention: In California, the legal definition is "lane-sharing." Lane-splitting seems to be a bureaucratic no-no. I ...

Re: Tall rider with seat issues

I may be late here, but I've owned a Russel Day Long (Before it was Russell). To my mind (and butt) they are the best choice around. On my current bike, I have a Bill Mayer Saddle and a peg lowering kit. I'm 6'1" and this combination seems to work best for me (in addition to elevating the bars).

Re: Cee Bailey windshield

I may be late to this thread, but my bike (purchased used) in 2006 came with a Cee Bailey shield. I'm 6'1" and the ride home from point of purchase in Northern California to my home in Southern California. I immediately set out to make the bike more user friendly. The three major improvements, ...

Oil Level sight glass

I hate to start a topic if it's already been covered. I read through the three most current pages of the forum and didn't see anything releated. My problem is: I pulled the bike onto the center stand and tried to check the oil level in the sight glass. The sight glass is totally black. No indication...

Re: Warm Weather Riding Jacket

I wear a custom made Bates leather jacket (I'm big and I'm fat) when it is the season for temps under 80 deg. F. As it gets warmer, the leather is a little uncomfortable. Next week I'm going to a rally on the central coast of California. I'll be wearing my Joe Rocket mesh jacket, but I'll be carryin...

Re: Horn replacement

OK, it looks as though all, but one, questions have been answered. That question in in regard to bikes equipped with ABS. Has anyone installed a Stebel on an 1150R with ABS?

Thanks for all the info,

Re: Horn replacement

Thanks for the pictures. What model / year is your bike? I am concerned about the possibility of impacting the horn when the suspension compresses. (I'm a big guy.)

Non-BMW accessories

I read a letter to the editor in a magazine wherein the writer had purchased a BMW 800. When he tried to use his new (for Christmas) Gerbings Electric Liner, it would not work. He, being a motorcycle mechanic, is undaunted and says that he can work around it. Has anyone any information that other th...

Re: Horn replacement

I saw an article online where a guy installed the Stebel on an 1150R. I have also heard that the ABS unit, if installed, is in the place where a Stebel would go. I have spoken to two local dealers about installing a Stebel. One tried to talk me out of it and the other said they were willing to try. ...

Re: Major Failure Poll

The fuel connection failure happened to me, too. I was riding home from work and pulled up behind an old clunker that smelled as though it was running a very rich fuel mix. Further down the road, the clunker was gone and the smell was still with me. I pulled over and saw the fuel hitting the ground....

Re: Seats - width

There is an alternative if all you are looking for is maybe another half-inch or so. My brother-in-law who is as tall as I (6'1") rides a Star cruiser (1300, I believe). He is built differently from me. He offered me a ride on his bike. I was wearing sneakers at the time. I got on and flat-foot...

Re: Major Failure Poll

Ah, where to begin? Two summers ago, just after my wife and I bought her a bike so she could return to riding, we decided to take a run up into the mountains on a very nice Saturday in September. The ride up to the mountain town was uneventful. As we left the town and started down the mountain, I fo...

Re: Spirited Upshifts

The dealer's service department offered to install what they called a ceramic clutch with better wear properties (i.e., "forever") for another $500. I just couldn't spend that kind of money on top of what it was already going to cost me.

Re: Spirited Upshifts

Final update: I brought the bike home today and the shifting was butter-smooth. Don't ask teh price, but I'll tell you that I bought my last new bike for around the same amount of money in 1980.

Re: Checked my clutch disc, just about wish I hadn't

I just brought my bike home from the dealer after a transmission rebuild, clutch replacement and 24K service. My invoice shows the clutch plate for $139, on which I received a 10% discount (due, most probably, to the immensity of the job and price). Bike shifts really smoothly now.

Re: Spirited Upshifts

I thank you all for the input. Biting the bullet, I dropped the bike off at my local dealer and crossed my fingers. The upshot of his inspection is that there is galling on varous rotating parts of the shift mechanism and the clutch is near gone. There is also some seal leakage. I'm having it all do...

Spirited Upshifts

When under fairly hard acceleration, say on a freeway onramp, my bike ('04 1150RA) is sometimes VERY reluctant to upshift from 2 to 3 or from 3 to 4. Some months back my shift lever broke leaving me to come down a mountain road in 2nd gear with clutch and brake for speed control. Could I have damage...
