PIAA Superwhite Headlight

I found after my annual ABS fluid change I had an extra $45 burning a hole in my pocket. Always on the lookout for bright things I bought a PIAA SuperWhite H4 headlight bulb to replace the stock one when I got home. Being ethnically Techish I decided to check out how much my expenditure bought me :i...

R1150R first bike

One thing I was not ready for on my 2004 was the suddenness of the brakes at low speed. They can grab and stop you way too quick at parkinglot speeds. The bike grabs and drops you just that quick At low speeds and comming to a stop I use the rear (foot) brake almost exclusively.

Speed

My speedo is off a bit more than that, but I checked it out with my GPS and now know that I'm about 5 miles per hour off pretty much all the way through the speedo range. There are several places locally where the highway is marked off in 1 mile increments. There are tic marks on the side of the roa...

Ridin' in the rain!

The only two times my bike's acted up in a missing/poor idle way was after filling with gas after riding in the rain. The first time it happened I was all at a loss, but finally got her going, ran that batch of gas out and that was the end of it. Second time I made my way to the local car parts hous...

Too cleaver by half I am.

Well, i think I've mentioned that my garage is very very humid at times during the winter and water actually condenses out on metal objects left standing in there like a frosty cold one on a warm summer day. So to combat this I put a 40 watt light bulb under my bike to keep the temp a few degrees ab...

Similar symptom in really nasty weather.

I had a similar experience twice but both times there were after fueling after riding in really foul weather. My suspicion is that I managed to allow some water to accumulate in the crack around the fuel filler port. When i opened it to fuel the bike it allowed water to run into the gas tank. As soo...

Oil leak

Today when I stopped at my favorite hardware store I noticed the lower arm that goes to the rear end (a torque stabilizer kinda' thingie I think.) and the pivot where it attaches to the rear end were dirty. So I checked it out and it seems that there is oil leaking from the bellows between the drive...

A troubleshooting aid for intermittently blowing fuses.

An old trick is to wire a tiny 12 v light bulb directly across the fuse. So long as the fuse is intact the light will be dark since it is in effect shorted out. As soon as the fuse blows the light will light. So you can wire it up like this (use long enough wires to get your test light out where it ...

Battery disposal

Thought I'd pass along a little info. My local Interstate Battery seller will take any lead acid/gel cell battery you want to get rid of. Seems they are obligated to return as much poundage as they sell so they are always interested in taking your old battery.

Trips on my R

2004 R1150R. Been on some fairly long rides, system cases and sport windscreen now. Tank bag when I'm out for more than a day or two. I envy all the accessories or peripherals that the GS has available, but I make do and for me that's part of the fun. I spend hours agonizing over how to get what I w...

A different view

Where I live the big problem on any metal machinery stored in an unheated garage is condensation. I've literally seen it form on my lathe and run off in little rivulets. So I believe that the best policy in this area is to run the engine often enough to cook any water out of the crankcase and cylind...

Sad that they no longer manufacture them

I have a set of Stantons and they protected my valve cover once when I dropped the bike and was far from home. I am certain that without them I would have been pushing it the 700+ miles it took me to get home. As it was, I only needed a hand full of large zip ties to reattach my system cases and sec...

Gasoline choices

I got to thinking about it. Actually I could guess that there's probably less than 50 people (Petroleum Chemical Engineers) that know what the hell we're putting in our gastanks. I know years ago I had a chainsaw that literally fell apart after a winter using a fuel with ethanol in it. I didn't know...

Three discoveries

My packing is continually evolving through continuious experimentation. My most recent trip involved camping and I found these three new things worked well. 1) a .5 mil (that's .0005 inch) painter's poly drop cloth worked well to shelter my bike from the morning frost and dew that plagued a few othe...

anyone noticed this?

Yesterday returning home on a rather extended (for me) ride I had occasion to run downhill using engine braking for maybe a mile or so. It did a great job of keeping the bike at a sane speed, (this was in 3rd gear). When I finally decided it was safe to shift up to 4th. It was really hard to shift u...

Packing

My "system" is constantly evolving. Currently everything's packed for a trip to Quincy, Ca. This time I tried to keep all the weight low. Meaning that the tent poles went in one system bag, my monster tent pins go in the other, etc. All I've got up in the dry bag is my two man tent, sleepi...

Gasoline history

Has anyone besides me noticed that modern gas dosent' seem to be as good as it once was? It craps up engines faster, stores much shorter, and gets fewer mpg. I suspect that Chevron made it's gas nastier so they could sell Techron, which is probably the good stuff they took out of their gas to make i...
