Sreens again

Post by ShinySideUp »

OK, I got some pics of the ZTechnik / Laminar Lip install.

Because I had to flex the Laminar Lip so much to flatten it out, the 3M adhesive dots didn't want to hold it in place: I saw 1 of the 6 come loose on the freeway.

So I came home and put 8-32 SS oval head machine screws with lock nuts in all of them. Looks a bit busy up there, but I have confidence in its ability to stay up there!

Bill

That is impressive.
This shield set-up gives a whole new meaning to the word "ugly".
Everybody to his taste. If it feels good when riding then it's probably justified.
But you should show some consideration to innocent and unprepared bystanders.

Shocked regards

OK, OK... I'll throw a duffel bag over it when I'm riding in populated areas.

Form or function?

Post by Caroanbill »

Hmmm. I understand the need for a bike that just 'works', bugger the looks - but I've mostly managed a reasonable aesthetic too. Well, my F650CS is kinda buried under wannabe-tourer farkles ...

Until last weekend I'd have written off the Z-Tecnhik on form alone. I like its shape, and its obvious coverage - but to my eye it argues too much with the bike's lines.

But now I've got my first serious argument between helmet and turbulence - my new System 5 helmet (BMW to us, Schuberth to US .. oh, leave the puns alone, Billy) HATES the Wunderlich Vario Screen on my CS, and no amount of screen height variation can shift a thunderous rumble in any (bearable) ride position. If the 16" Cee Bailey screen I have for the R12R does the same, and particularly if it shows that an 18" screen won't fix the noise, I'll be seriously considering a less visually sympathetic option!

The 22" Parabellum would be my first stop - still argues with the bike in my aesthetic, but it's completely clear (no metal patches) and it does use the stock mount

Z-Tecnnik only second or third, Givi after that ....

Bill before you lay out serious money for a parabellum or other solution you may want to try a few feet of the Saeng edging. With the edging installed it definitely reduces turbulence for me and they offer a money back guarantee as well. It also cleans up the look of the shield with a nice black trim. http://www.saeng.com/4000.htm

Holy Cow! that 22" Parabellum is one big screen. Myself I have gone back to the sport screen untill it gets cold enough to need a larger one. I have the GIVI screen but I guess I am just not as taken with it as I could be.

GIVI shield

Post by qgaex »

Hi there!

The GIVI shield came today. Mint condition. Thanks RHD!
Fixed it to the bike this evening. Took a ride.
It's somewhat more silent than the BMW Touring Shield, especially around 100 km/h. But it gives some more buffeting gusty shaking to the helmet at 100 mph. (Didn't want to try any higher speeds at 10 °C in the rain.(Yes, I know. But aren't we all a bit mad?))
I suppose that could be the result of a) GIVI not using such a super solid mounting like the original and consequently the top of the shield shaking while the BMW shield stays solid as a rock or b) the airodynamics being more complex with this rather high shield.
But since my Black Forest speeds are on the low side anyhow this is probably the best shield for the winter as far as I'm concerned.
Testing continues.
But I propose a new hypothesis:
There is no perfect shield.
(Proof to the contrary gladly accepted....)

Cheers

I am thinking about taking two inches off of the top of my Givi screen to see if that gets my head out of the turbulance. I have no idea how to cut it without messing it up.

Right Hand Drive wrote:Greetings all. I'm new to the board having bought my R1200R 2 months ago. Fabulous bike and just took me 2000 miles around a very wet France in a week. I have been going through the screen odyssey that some here have been doing and finally settled on the Cee Bailey 20". I tried the Wudo two part screen first. Looks great, great quality (expensive) but was just a little low for me. Then I tried the Givi, again nice quality and good protection but the style didn't do it for me. Finally the Cee Bailey which worked well and suited my taste in looks. Got there eventually. I do now have two nearly new screens which are surplus to requirements so if any of you guys are interested in them let me know. Even here in the UK the bike is still newish and there doesn't seem to be much discussion about it on any of the UK BMW sites.

Hi Rich: If you are interested, I did an extensive R1200R report and did the whole "find the right screen" thing. I also ended up with the 20"CeeBailey, which seems to work well for me. The report is here:

http://www.dualsportridersoflouisiana.c ... php?t=2378

Please feel free to post it on the UK boards so the information gets out. It is actually an ongoing blog about the bike.

Screens Again

Post by ShinySideUp »

Thanks for posting your experience Doug. And thanks to Leonardo for pointing out the Saeng trim.

So here's where I am in my windscreen grail quest:

The Z-Technik produced too much buffeting with my height (6'1") and the Laminar Lip tamed it about 75%. I've tried the Saeng trim (with the Laminar Lip in place) and can't tell much difference, perhaps another 5%.

Being totally spoiled by the tall Rifle screen on my old ST1100, I don't think I'm going to be satisfied over the long haul with anything less than a tall screen.

So I ordered a Parabellum Scout with 20" screen today. I'm reasonably sure it will do the job, and am relieved at their 30-day trial period.

The news item here is that there is currently a 9 week waiting period for the Scout.

No worries, though, the bike is such a joy to ride: floats like a butterfly... hauls like a bat.

I have ordered the Parabellum 22" replacement screen, in the hope that it won't argue so loudly with my helmet .. the problem is the way the lower air inlet works on the helmet - VERY LOUD when it's open above 80km/h. I think a larger area of quiet air might solve the problem.

Having been through some very heavy rain with the CeeBailey 16", I will welcome the extra width and lower coverage of the Parabellum. I may well cut down the top edge (step by step, then smooth and polich once I've got a final height) if it intrudes too much into my vision - my screen is no longer transparent after 20 million bugs suicide onto it!

At worst I will have a Cee Bailey summer screen and a Parabellum winter one (no money-back trial outside the US, so I can't send it back).

I've also decided I'll add the Wunderlich 'clear protect' lower screens: my boots got sodden, even with waterproofing. My feet stay dry inside the goretex, but the leather suffers - and the boots are too wet to walk inside in.

(note to LeonardoNYC - I couldn't bear that black Saeng edging in my forward vision, so it's not an option)

Wonderful!

(Up to the point where it gets a mite cold and drafty at certain speeds and temperatures....)

I took my Givi screen off in late August and tried it naked and it was OK but I liked the looks of the bike better with the sport screen. I may sell the Givi or wait till cold weather and put it back on.

Another thumbs up for no screen. In fact, I took off the small, stock, sport windscreen to make it even quieter.

+2 on the no-screen setup. It is very quiet with my Shoei X-11, but at highway speed you will get beat up pretty good above 65 mph.

If I ever get some time to play, I am thinking of taking my router and shaving the BMW sport screen down about 1/4 inch at a time. The screen is a little too tall for me, and puts the air buffet directly on the chin bar of the helmet. Really bad buffet and very loud.

The whole point of cutting the screen down a little is to try to put the buffet just at the top of my shoulders, and under the helmet so it will be in clean air.

Unfortunately, at this time, we are in the middle of the second-edition of lovebug season, so it is not a good time to be riding in the clear. I picked up about a thousand of the critters on an 80 mile ride last weekend, and it is a pain to clean the bike.

One of the really obnoxious things about the bugs is that they get into the cylinders around the exhaust stacks and cook. They smell really, really bad when stopped. You wonder what is burning on the RR. :(

Well maybe what I'll do is no screen warm weather, and local backroads etc. Tall for touring and cold weather.. I hate buffeting. That's the main reason I'm getting rid of my 2 month old Triumph Tiger 1050. I can't get clean air, without putting a barn door on the bike, grrrr

Although I couln't get the site to come up to that product, that is exactly what I am looking for. I love it. Retro Me. A fairing like the one on the R100Ss and the R90Ss.
