Temps are dropping--time to check your antifreeze!

Here in Va we've had some mid-40's morning temps-won't be long before it is down to freezing.

Time to check the antifreeze in your R's dual radiators!!

A properly maintained system will show on the antifreeze tester protection down around -10 degrees or so.

I run a good quality 50/50 mix in mine and it has always tested to at least -20.

So they're radiators....I wondered what they were..

Anyone noticed the duel radiators on the new Suzuki B-King.. http://users.skynet.be/hayabusa/images/bking2.jpg

It was falling in love with the concept B-King that made me love the 50R when I first saw it.

Anyway..Those twin radiators on the B-King are not radiators..not even oil coolers..not even air vents..they do nothing..except make it look like our 50R.

Towerworker,

Did you let it run on the sidestand for 5.25 minutes before you checked it? You cannot count on getting an accurate test result if the oilyator fluid isn't at normal operating temperature.

Ok guys----there seems to be a bit of confusion on the methodology of properly checking your r's antifreeze. I will attempt to vanquish all the seemingly smoke and mirrors.

But first to answer some burning questions:

DJ---yes they are radiators, but not just simple radiators----they are also hand warmers!

MikeCam----hanging with the wrong crowd? That kinda self incriminating isn't it? Who did I think I was going to have to push to get him out of my way on saturday?

Boxermania--yep--I do like the Dew!

Buckster---if you look on page 472 of your owner's manual (in the fine print) you will see that the schematic of the cooling system shows the coolant lines running a complete loop thru the handlebars--I have it on good authority that there is a side benefit in that arrangement---the coolant also absorbs engine vibration above 4K. Easier on the hands plus keeping the pinkies warm! Bottom line is -- Once you've checked the antifreeze level in the engine----the grips are good too!

R4R&R---Sorry just bought some for $15 a gal. If you're interested I'll send you the link.

Geothepencil---is that metric wrench available in left and right handed?

Dr Chew----yes I did although I used a metric timer---does that make a difference?

JCsman-- 3.7463 psi. (except on Sundays--increase by 1psi)

Spookymonster--- Yes I am

Synthetic anti-freeze or not? I have heard that it doesn't provide good thermal transfer at low temps.

I use the anti-freeze that is eco-friendly!

I'm told that there is some really good antifreeze sold at the alphabet store. Not sure what it will do for your engine though.............you probably won't care!

Hmm...

Personally I prefer the anti-freeze solutions manufactured in Scotland. A nightly wee dram of Glenfarclas, Aberlour, or Glenmorangie (or Lagavulin on those REALLY cold evenings!) seems to keep me from freezing up...or worrying about the R tucked away in a nice warm garage!

Just a thought, not much of one, but still, a thought....BJ

That is some really good antifreeze!!

Problem I have with that stuff is when I use it I have a heck of a time getting the wibblin pin on the wobblin gear!

Yup, that's why I don't imbibe whilst ridin'. Oh and one more thought. If the Scottish anti-freeze isn't available, one can make do with the domestic variety...say Wild Turkey Straight Rye.

Maybe if I started using antifreeze rather than oil it would not use as much??
