Steering dampener question

My steering dampener is leaking oil but still seems to be functioning OK
i guess until all the oil disappears, there is a circlip at one end which
would suggest disassembly is possible, is there anyone who has tried this
as the dampener has had little use from a new one fitted and i am
convinced its only an 'O' Ring or something similar, the cost is around
$600 which i consider expensive

Any ideas??
