Counting the Days
The countdown has begun; in exactly 1095 days on 1/1/2011 we are going to retire. Three years sounds like a long time but when I look back at how long I have been at my job (27 years) it is just around the corner. For our first big retirement adventure we have decided to ride to Alaska and expect to leave some time in June of 2011. Part of me is as excited as a little kid at Christmas and the other part is more frightened than I was when I got drafted. So if any of you are interested in joining us on the big ride you have plenty of time to plan. I hope everyone here is as excited about the future as we are and we wish you all the happiest of new years.

Yer wanted by the police and my wife thinks your dead.
12bar1 - Congratulations on your decision to hang it all up and ride! Maybe by then my kids will be out of school and I can do the same!
We drove to Alaska (from St. Pete) back in 1991 (before they paved the Alcan) which is an experience my family still talks about. It was the trip of a lifetime!
After that trip, I made a list of things to remember for the next trip (which hasn't happened yet), and I'll try to dig it up and see if anything applies to a bike trip. If I remember correctly, we drove about 12,000 miles round trip in 5 weeks.
I still have a vivid memory of the turqoise-blue Portage Glacier hanging over our campsite at 11:30pm while I was writing postcards at the picnic table. It was almost flourescent in the setting sunlight and awesomely beautiful!
