Sorry to hear about you mishap. Your incident reminded me of one of mine a few years back when a couple of friends and I went to a motorcycle show, the day was extremely hot and we had spent a fair amount of time in bumper to bumper traffic. Finally we arrived at the place and were looking for a place to park, apparently I was at the onset of heat exhaustion, because while attempting to come to a stop I just toppled over on the right side, bike and I (it was a Ducati 900 Monster)

When I came to I was soaking wet and resting on the bed of a trailer, where my friends had placed me and I didn't remember anything. Fortunately I didn't break anything, the only reminder, which I still carry with me was a welt where the exhaust touched the inside of my leg a few inches above the ankle. Personally, I think these incidents are reminders of how fragile life is and that anything can happen at any given time.

In regards to your bike, it looks that you are going to need a valve cover (right) one turn signal (rear) and a stop light lens. The rest can be sanded and painted, or left alone as it will add character to your bike.

Since we're talking about odd-ball accidents..

So far the only road-rash I've had in 34 years of riding - happened on foot on the way to the NY Motorcycle Show last December. I managed to trip over my own feet, fall fowards into 11th Ave, come down solidly on one knee, which tore open and got some lovely NYC gravel/road-dirt/crap in it. That took a lot of fun out of the show, but I have to praise Javitt's Center in NYC - they have an excellent first-aid department.

As people say - $hit happens. Joe - heal fast, heal well, and we'll keep our eyes out for R bike parts to patch yours up..

Living in Chicago I pay quite a bit for good full coverage insurance and plan on Geico getting my bike back to original "perfect" condition. No used parts, no touch ups, they should replace anything thats damaged with OEM parts. I'm really hoping they will replace the damaged final drive case(?) so I get my final drive rebuilt right before I go out of warranty as a bonus... something good has to come of this...
If my prior experience from geico in a "not at fault" claim I made last year when a car was at fault for me dropping my bike I don't see this as a problem. Hopefully.

At a quick glance this is what's damaged:

muffler and bracket
tail rack right side
tail light
license plate holder
clutch lever

windscreen ( I get to do a new and improved paint job! woo hoo!)

My bike goes in on the 8th, so we shall see soon enough...

I've dropped a bike before - my first street bike, a Yamaha Maxim. Young and dumb I wore a helmet and gloves and no other proper gear. My shoes were work boots with laces. Coming to a stop on a street I go to put my left foot down and the shoe lace gets tangled on the foot rest. Down goes the bike. Then there was the time (same bike) I forgot to take the front disc lock off...

I'm sorry to hear of your insurance hassles. Our health care "system" is indeed broken. The son of a friend of mine broke his ankle playing touch football last month and the bill from Stanford's ER, covering X-ray, morphine, splint and crutches, was $8300! And that's before he sees his surgeon.

I've had to have a lawyer contact my insurance people to make them pay. Funny how, when they feel the heat, they see the light. Give 'em heck!

Just an FYI--even though the bill states such, that in no way should be considered what the hospital really gets. That will be determined by the insurance carrier and will be significantly less. the bill could say a million dollars but that has no effect on the amount of reimbursement


And Chi-Town--thanks for the X Rays--speaking outside of my area of expertise, but those are the 3rd 4th and 5th metatarsals. When you said three bones in the ankle I thought "tri-maleolar" fracture and that is MUCH worse.

You will bounce back from this though you're going to feel it when you shift for a while. PT for this should be pretty decent.

And you're right about the patience of the ER personnel. Having pulled that duty a bunch, the successful people have the patience of Job to tolerate the abuse they are subjected to at work. Being cursed, spit on, bitten as well as dealing with the human tragedy that is day to day, creates some pretty dark humor there--as well as in the OR.

That's pretty rough, man. Sorry to hear about it. Hope the recovery is full and better than can be expected. The earlier comments about the speed that crashes happen is right on. The stupidity too- I dumped my Rockster on the street a block and a half from my house a year and a half ago. I moved out to go around a delivery van, got on the gas and THEN realized that it was about 40 degrees F, my tires were stone cold and the road was wet. Span the rear wheel out and went down at about 30mph, right in front of my girlfriend on her way to work (smooth, I know ). I got lucky and came away with bruises from the waist down and not much else. It was a lesson about wearing gear though- my upper half wearing all the gear was fine and my lower half wearing jeans and street shoes was not. $3800 in damage done in about 1/2 second.

Hope you manage to get back on as fast as you're ready. I'm looking forward to more backwoods travelogues on street tires!

I had surgery on Thursday, and things went well. At least that's what the Dr. said.
For me it was quite scary (first time under the knife), and afterwards incredibly painful. Didn't sleep for 30 hours after due to the pain, until I went back to a ER and got some better pain pills.
The Dr. said he was "very aggressive" with my surgery because I was in good shape and wanted to be back on my feet ASAP. That's why it hurt so much I figure. He's saying if things go well I should be putting weight on it in 3 weeks, and be back to normal in 6, with little PT. To me that means I could be riding in 3 weeks! woohoo!
I have a wrapped bandage, and I boot thing on now. No cast, which I think I like much more. The pain is to manageable levels, and I'm feeling better day to day.
As for the bike, I haven't taken it in yet, been too busy with trying to survive.. but hopefully will get it in this week. I want to get this over with, and my motorbike back in action...
I bought a SLR camera, and have been passing the time reading many photography books, and watching video's. I'm hoping to step up my photography a couple of notches, and I am very excited to get out, ride and shoot..

I bought a Nikon D40 on ebay, a factory refurb with warranty for $400 with 18-55 lens that I sold on craigslist and replaced with a 18-55mm lens with Image Stabilization. I bought the D40 because of it small size, affordable price, and great reviews. It fits in my existing pelican tank box.... that was important to me.
I will regret this, but here's a gimped up self portrait using the IR remote. I day in the life me shot with the D40, using Apple Aperture for post processing. Would be more appropriate if I had Long Way Down playing....

I have a Canon 20D DSLR and I simply make room for it. Maybe it's just me but when I see a picture I want most times a point and shoot just won't satisfy. Maybe it's all in my head.

I'm feeling much better, not even needing to take pain pills all the time now.
I made it out today with my new wheels(crutches), after seeing Ewan use these forearm crutches in Long Way Down I picked up a pair and am very happy I did. Much easier to get around...
Kind of embarrassing , but I took my bike to Chicago BMW today to get the repair started, the good news is they will be replacing the whole final drive assembly. They don't just swap out the parts if case gets damaged, and that's just fine with me considering I am a few thousand mile away from going out of warranty.
I'd imagine I'll need to do a fluid change in FD after 600 miles, like the initial break-in.
It's kind of sad to see, but we just strapped the bike to the wall in a friends truck since that whole side is getting replaced anyway...
If things go as planned I should be back in the saddle in less than 20 days...

don't get discouraged if three weeks comes and goes...that foot is going to be swollen and throb for much longer than that. And I am sure you've discovered:
Ice is your friend and if it is throbbing, get it elevated higher than your heart.
And don't push it...you will not make it heal faster, only risk more injury.

Lots o stresses on those metatarsals with riding, shifting, stopping. It will heal.

I spoke with the SM at my dealer, and according to his estimate the cost of repairing my bike to pre-crash condition is over $8500. I didn't really get into specifics but I'm very close to the $$ line of my bike being totaled he said.
Now I'm just waiting for the adjuster to go check it out.

My foot is feeling better, though I doubt I'll be back on my feet in a few weeks, but at least the painful part is over, mostly. This thursday the stitches come out, and I get a sonic stimulator to use 3 times a day. I'm spending most of my time laying around with my foot up, really trying to take it easy so I can heal well...

I actually rode today. Test rode a Suzuki Savage 650 around the block. That was as far as I could go.
