I was going to take mine off but I worked around it. It would be interesting to know what was involved to remove it. Over 60 hits and no replies.
Maybe you should have started an oil thread.

Not hard, it's late now, long day and a couple of dingle (evidently the board doesn't like some words beginining with C and ending in tail but Ive been drinking rum and coke)sooo I can't remember exactly. So search my user name or Ohlin's install and either I or someone else have a post re: removal. Not hard at all, best of luck

After removing the seat I just walked around the bike taking out what ever fasteners it seemed necessary to remove the tank. It should come to you.

From what I can remember, you start by taking off the plastic trim pieces. on either side. There are two per side. Then there's the fuel line and the connection to the fuel pump. It's pretty easy.

Remove the plastic trim pieces and the one behind the steering head attached to the tank. There is a bolt on the left side that retains the tank which you will see on removing the trim pieces. Slide it (the tank) back carefully and detach the quick connects. Easy!. It also helps to have a tank not full of gas !! Be careful to not lose any of the gazillion screws that hold everything together .

Besides the two throttle body covers (2 screws each) - you have to remove the front mounting screws for the side plastic panels that run down under the seat. I recall 2 screws on each. Then after removing the bolt on the left side (T40 from memory..) you can lift the tank a bit, disconnect the wiring, the vent hoses (I'd suggest marking where they connected so you don't confuse them) and the two quick disconnects for the fuel lines.

I'd also suggest having replacement O rings for the quick disconnects. They like to nick on removal and leak on reassembly. They are standard O-ring size 011 - get Viton ones, it's resistant to gasoline. A tiny dab of motor oil on them will make it slide together much more easily (depress the tab on the female one - when the male one is fully home - release the tab.)

All this is from memory - I'm about 400 miles from my bike at the moment.. but should see it tomorrow.

PS - first snow today in the Finger Lakes region of NY state.. I hate snow.

Had to remove the gas tank recently. I took pictures about the process and added some description. Check the link, hope it helps.

Wow, what a great post! I've been avoiding removing my tank for some time now because, although the steps in the manual are clear, what is where is not. Thank you very much for the clear pictures and explanation. There ought to be a sticky for pictorials like this.

Does the tank have to come off to replace the air cleaner? I ask because I attached a second horn to the hole in the right front of the tank and the bike's going in for service. If the tank has to come off I'll remove the second horn temporarily. Don't want the tech to accidentally yank those wires.

Thanks.

I just remembered the outstanding fuel system recall; does anyone know if the tank comes off for that?

The tank has to come off for the recall. The tank has to be off the bike to inspect the fuel pump flange, and to add the reinforcing ring or replace the pump assembly.
