Exhaust glowing red

Post by tmarshall »

Just washed the bike and took it for a ride to dry the brakes out and noticed that the exhaust was glowing a nice red,(after sundown) like super heated metal. Is this normal?

Yep; the Roadster runs a fairly lean mixture for emissions reasons and the pipes are single-wall designs so the glow is perfectly normal. It's scary, though, the first time you see it!

I assume you know not to let the bike sit and idle for lengthy periods of time-----like more than two minutes.
The R has to have airflow over the jugs or you will overheat in a hurry.

I try to avoid alot of stop and go traffic. I'm admittedly over cautious with cooling.

the exhaust? or the headers coming out of the cylinders? the cat?

I had one of my headers glowing red, bought Twinmax, synchronized the throttle bodies and presto, no more glow

also it could just be running V.lean ...

of course your cause could be ever so different ... and I may be quite wrong
