wow, I just replaced both of mine on my 2004 twin spark and frankly I am blown away by all the problems fixed and increased power, idle is back to normal, no more hesitation, runs, sounds better at all rpms. The bike has 40K miles, but its been running bad for like 2 years. Breaks my heart to think that I've been mistreating my engine for so long, counting on the spark of the secondary plug. I paid like 90. from Chicago and would recomend replacing these to anyone who's engine not running as it should. Also note, that they are different from the original units. Apparently BMW upgraded without sending a recall.
I'm back in love with my Roadster for the second time.

Seems like almost every German car with direct ignition has had coil problems too.

Bosch just can't seem to get these right.

Part # 12 13 7 680 644 about 90 each from Chicago BMW, I recommend replacing them to anyone with engine problems. The bike has so much more power that I've had to change the way I change gears, and power that jolts my neck back.

I took apart the old ones and there was no oxidation, but apparently the problem is within the coils. The new coils have a grey ring around the top of the tube, definately a BMW upgrade yet no recall for the other old ones. Coat the insides with dialectric grease.

Yes, there HAS to be a coil for all spark plugs. 12VDC is not enough voltage to arc across the gap of a sparkplug in a compressed atmosphere. The secondary coil is up under the fuel tank (IIRC). The secondary plugs share one coil.

It's shockingly simple once you buy the coil-puller. The BMW plastic one sucks but can be made to work.
