i emailed kisan asking which model tailblazer modulator would be correct for my bike which is an 2004 r1150r with no abs and this was the response they provided me:
Hi Shawn:
If you have EVO brakes or a Lamp check system that activates the red triangle warning indicator if the bulb is burned out, use 20W-DZ.

20W Halogen element used for the brakes of both units is much. much brighter than stock #1157 bulbs.

um....i'm at work and wanted to order this while i'm here, would anyone be able to chime in as to wehter they know or not for sure if my bike has that EVO brakes or lamp check system?? lol, i haven't owned it long enough to know off the top of my head...
also, the tech states that the 20w halogen is much brighter than the stock 1157? can anyone comment on the validity of this statement?

I have an 04 R1150R as well and was planning on ordering the Tailblazer. Page 63 of the "Rider's Manual - US" states:
"General warning light 3 lights up if the BMW Integral ABS develops a fault, or if the tail light or brake light is inoperative"
(the General Warning Light is the triangle)
So my guess is that our bikes will need the 20W-DZ.

If your bike does not have ABS it does not have the EVO brake system. The EVO brakes linked the front and rear and I believe were servo-assisted. But without abs, you don't have any of that. So order accordingly.

Once upon a time I had a good authoritative reference link concerning the BMW Motorrad introduction for the Evo brake setup, but until i find it again, here's an ADV thread that covers the topic:

That's the incorrect statement. The Evo brakes are BMW's design for combination of 2-piston caliper (different piston diameters), disk, and brake master cylinder. The Integrated ABS, whether fully- or partially-linked, is a separate system.wait which part was wrong, the part about if i don't have ABS then i don't have the EVO system?
Your communication with Kisan concerns only the ABS system, for which the controller computer has fault checks for continuity on brakes switches (the reason they're normally closed circuits) and both the tail and brake lamp filaments. The concern over brake light modulator like the TailBlazer is any problem that might arise from change in brake lamp circuit resistance due to splicing, etc. and the ABS controller's fault sensing.
If you don't have ABS, then you don't have to worry about any of this. Non-ABS brake switches are normally-open, and adding either a brake light flasher and/or additional brake lights will not trip a fault.

According to the website, both the 20W-D and the 20W-DZ have a dual contact base. The website also says the 20W-DZ has "dual ballast for BMW CAN-bus circuit to interface with BMW's ZFE computer control and monitoring." Also, the application chart says to use the 20W-DZ for the 2000-2003 R1150R (It makes no distinction between ABS and non-ABS). It has no information for the 2004-2006 R1150R. It also says use the 20W-DZ for the 2009 R1200R.
The same chart was wrong in predicting what headlight modulator I would need, and I find it hard to believe that the R1150R would use the same bulb as the R1200R with CAN-bus.
I have one of these. I expect either will work, but I am wondering if only the right one will allow the check bulb light to come on? If so, there is no way to just plug this thing in and know it is the right one or not.
