Broken Hardbag Lock

Post by Willfreely »

Can anyone offer help as to repairing/replacing the orange locking tongue mechanism on the case lock? I accidentally left the bag in locked position while cover was open, then closed & too hard tried to press the handles into locking position. This bent the locking tongue and unfortunately, while trying to bend it back into position, it broke (very unforgiving material). The plastic casing surrounding the lock mechanism looks to be riveted in place and I can find no means of dis-assembly. Granted the case stay shut, but it doesn't lock and being the larger of the two (not over the muffler) it's the one I usually lock my helmet in. Is there someplace to send them for repair or am I doomed to find a right side case somewhere?

The lock assembly can be removed by drilling out the rivets. I have done two in the past. Possibly you may find a member with an old busted case you can buy for not much $$. You can I believe buy a new assembly from BMW and reinstall it yourself but they are pricey I'm told---maybe $200 or so.

Good luck!

Thanks for the link. After seeing all the other tales of woe, I still feel dumb but not lonely.

I have not had this happen yet, but very nearly did, so I wrote down this part number for a replacement part that I think is a less expensive repair than replacing all the expensive guts.

I noted it as a "repair for broken orange locking tab":
Locking Mechanism F Multifunction Box p/n 71607654337
which I noted (a few years ago) costs ~ $40

Hope this helps get yours fixed cheaper...

here is a link to a fix I did on my system cases.

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=557905

drilling out the rivets to fix the multi-box, then riveting it back in is not a big deal. Just takes a little time.
The only thing is that none of the hardware stores like lowes home depot carry the needed 5/32 size rivets.
I ended up going to Fastnel in tulsa,ok to get the needed rivets, and since I only needed seven they gave them to me for free!

good luck with the fix.
