Fair Price for 2002 R1150R

Post by combatcarry »

After owning every Japanese brand, Harleys, and a KTM I'm ready for a change. I've sold all my other motorcycles and I have cash in hand!

I think I've fallen for the BMW R bikes. I have two in my sights. Here is the first http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad ... 144&lpid=1 Here is the second http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-050-MI ... 500wt_1182

What would be a good deal on these bike (for a cash transaction)? Are there any particular things I need to look for? Should I be overly concerned about the mileage on the first one?

Thanks!

The R1150R would be a better buy than the 1999, larger engine, 6 speed gearbox and it's unmol;ested. The price is very competitive, but I figure that there will be a bidding war at the end of the alloted time. Good luck.

+1 for 1150 non ABS. Seating is better. I just bought an 02 R1150R and love it .I would think $5k-$6k with bags and windshield is fair. BTW, mine looks like the one in Arizona. I get 33-37 mpg in the city, and 49.7 mpg on my first and only road trip.

I bought a virtually identical bike, similarly equipped, similar (pristine) condition for the price the auction is right now. I e-mailed the seller within an hour that he posted and bought it that night. He showed me 9 other e-mails from people wanting the bike. No guarantee that there were real buyers waiting behind me, but its easy to say that at that price the bike will move.

Another similar bike was offered not too long ago in Houston at $6500. It sold, but not immediately, at an unknown price.

I love my bike, and knowing what I know now would consider $6k on the rich side but worth it to me. I would buy it all day long for $5k or 5.5k, and that's without bags.

Bikes have different values depending on where they are located so call these Texas prices. YMMV. If you have to ship the bike, you have to figure in that as well of course.

I'd go for the second one, not only because I have one that is almost identical. I bought it with 35,000 miles on it and have added another 10,000. If possible, I seem to like and appreciate it better with each ride. You won't be disappointed.

Missed the comment on the ad that the bike has a dent on the tank.

Tanks can't be fixed and are uber expensive to replace ($600?). I have a hard time ignoring stuff like that so I would have to figure that in as to how high I would go.

YMMV. Otherwise, again, looks like a great bike. If not this one, I would shop other R1150R's before going for a R1100R unless one was offered for a screaming deal.

Good luck.

My Beakster is an 02' and I've been thinking of selling it to buy an F800GS. I've had a couple of back surgeries and wanted something with a longer suspension and narrower.

Black 02' R1150R 26K miles Excellent condition
Bar Backs
ABS
BMW Touring screen
BMW Luggage rack
GS handguards
Heated grips
BMW headguards
Corbin leather seat
Lower Staintune exhaust
BMW hard bags (full depth left, no cutout for exhaust)
New Michelin Pilot roads
Fenda Extenda
Extra power outlet for GPS/heated gear?

So what do you guys think she's worth?

The first bike listed (the 1999 R1100R) can be had for $3500 cash. Does that change the recommendations?

This one also looks good and is within driving distance for me: http://www.r1150r.net/board/viewtopic.p ... 11c3b2fcd4

I got the bug! Help me choose. :)

Just curious... Why can't tanks be fixed?

My statement, made with too little thought. I guess I should have said I think tanks can't be fixed for less, or much less, than the cost of a replacement tank which I think on these bikes is around $600 so that needs to be factored in if it bothers you.

But am I right? Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

I think the thing about the R1100 is 5 speeds (no overdrive) and at $3500, seems a lot for that age and mileage. But then, it depends on how you are going to use it, which bike appeals to you most etc. And of course, this forum is bound to be a little biased. Then again, the fact that this forum exists at all says a lot about the R1150R.

As to fair pricing, you might want to check http://www.kbb.com, http://www.nada.com, and my new favorite http://www.craigslook.com as to both bikes.

Hope this helps.

This bike is owned by a guy that was pretty active here for the short time between owning the bike and putting it up for sale. You should check out his posts. I recall he was very proud and enthusiastic about the bike but is leaving or by now left for NYC and couldn't use or store the bike in the city. He had one reported problem with the bike, which was the fuel disconnects broke which is a frequent problem on all of these bikes if not fixed first. He caught it too late. The problem is fixed (just a simple replacement part) but the fuel will stain the throttle body. You can see it in one of his pictures.

When I buy, I like to feel good about the seller (the old saying is buy the seller, not the [bike]. I would be confident buying off of him (he bought the tailblazer from me by the way). FWIW.

It is hard to tell what the bike is worth. The main factor is always the reason and how soon you have to sell the bike.
Last year I found a nice 2004 with an ABS to replace my 2002 none ABS.
I really can not tell them apart, as far as performance and handling. I have almost the same toys on my bike like yours.
I did not advertise my bike, just mentioned to my local dealer about putting my bike up for consignment.
The next day a nice gentlemen came over to look at the bike. I have to admit that cosmetically my bike is not in the upper class, but mechanically it is in excellent shape. The guy offered me 3K for my bike. I just gave him a nice smile and thanked him for the offer. After the handshake I recommended to take a look at the nice and shiny 250cc Honda Rebel, for only 1000 bucks more. :-k
I think that my bike is worth more than 3K. How much more :?:
I really don't know
But for 3K I will keep it for my self or for my visiting friends. I don't know the condition of your bike, but I will not let my bike go less than $4500.00 :)

Good Luck.

The 1100 series tends to hold their value in the $3K-5K range depending on overall cosmetics, mechanical condition, and market factors. The 1150 series looks to follow that pattern. A single spark 2002-2003 Roadster, non-ABS, good to very good cosmetics and fully up-to-date services (brake fluids especially) seems to be priced in the $4k-5.5K range these days. Dual spark 2004 and later appear to be in the $5K-6.5K range. Accessories are a crap shoot based on quality of installation, fit and function, and appeal to the buyer. System cases, windshields, SignalMinders, and some driving lights tend to add value. All other accessories tend to be worth little unless a particular buyer wants them. Generally, future failures are going to be in the ABS module, clutch slave cylinder, final drive small bearing race, front wiring harness, rubber brake and clutch hoses. Unexpected failures of the final drive big bearing, transmission input shaft, and clutch hub splines are possible in some small number of bikes but nobody has any good numbers to suggest that is more than 1-3% of all models. Overall, if the bike looks good, has service records, shows that maintenance has been done - new spark plugs, fuel filters, air filters, fluids, and tires, then you can hope to get a satisfying ride.

For me - fair price for any 2002 R1150R would be $4k or lower. Add for low mileage, system cases, heated hand grips, small windscreen, SignalMinder, BRAKE! module. Subtract for driving lights, touring windscreen, any other electrical add-on, lack of fresh fluids, filters, and tires or records.

Best of luck.

Dealer maintained could be a big plus, but a knowledgeable owner maintained bike could be better. :-k

I spent a lot of time, researching and ended up with two prospects online, sort of like you are doing right now.

I ended up purchasing a 2002 ABS with 31000 miles on it. The dealer had recently serviced the bike, including the clutch slave cylinder. I tend to be a perfectionist, but recognize that a used bike is just that, a used bike. The one I settled on is in very nice condition cosmetically, but it does have a few very minor dings. Nothing very noticable, especially considering it is what it is...an eight year old bike.

It came with a touring windscreen, BMW system cases, BMW luggage rack, heated grips (which I am finding really, really nice in our cooler weather, right now), a throttle stop, LED flashng tail light and BMW rubber engine gaurds and the color I wanted. Initally, they were asking $6995. With just a little wheeling and dealing, I ended up paying $5750 because they said they were having a "winter used bike sale". Funny how their "winter sale" happened to coincide with my interest in the bike they had. Don't get me wrong. The dealer I worked with was very much intereted in making the deal work and followed up on the sale. But their interests in selling the bike, nicely conincided with my purchase. Shipping was $650, so the total cost to me was $6400, delvered to my door.

It came with a high seat which I had to switch out for a low one, but I was able to sell the high seat right here on the forum. Overall, I think I got a pretty darned good deal. You might want to note that Kelly blue book has considerably higher used values than NADA. I think it really comes down to how much you like and want a particular bike and how bad you want it. I would suggest patience, but I would'nt wait forever on the perfect deal.
