Prospective Owner Introduction and Thanks

Post by DocStrange »

I'm a new rider about to take the MSF course (next week!) but I've been wanting a BMW motorcycle for almost 25 years, ever since I saw a 1986 K75 regularly parked behind my college bookstore. Now I've been living deep in Harley country for ten years and I'm looking forward to riding something different on the road 8) .

It's been more than a year of research about the current and recent crop of BMW motorcycles as I sought to find the right first bike for me, and with the R1150R I have finally found it. I'm 6'5", and I was amazed at just how few bikes I had any chance of fitting on, even with lowered pegs, raised seats, etc. I kept trying to convince myself of the F650GS (twin) but not only was it also slightly small, but just didn't see that same beautiful styling I associate with my favorite BMWs. Besides, I'm not a GS guy (and not an RT guy either) -- I want a standard all-around bike for getting around town, some day trips, and the occasional long journey, but I wanted it to have style.

The current R1200R is very nice, but a bit expensive for me and I have some reservations about having a brand new bike as my first (which I will surely drop). In researching it, I found this site, and that led me to the 1150. Once I saw that design, that was it. Then I read John Burns great 2002 Ride Report. The "nanovirus" I've seen referenced here can apparently be transmitted over the internet. :D

A huge thank you to everyone here at this incredible resource. I'll become a member just as soon as I'm an actual R owner. I've just located a 2003 R1150R at the local BMW dealer. It's a very fast red and it's here:
BMW 2003 R 1150 R

I'm planning to go see it in person and throw a leg over it today. Any advice about this bike would be very greatly appreciated (I'm amazed at what you all can see in photos of a bike, and there are several of this one). I'm especially curious to hear if you all think it's a fair price given the age, mileage, and extras.

Thanks again!

It would be real nice in black. I have had a look and I am not 100% sure but I think that the bike in the pictures is fitted with the low seat option which could be a problem for you at 6 foot 5 inches tall.
There is a high seat available and also footpeg lowering kits, talk to the dealer about the seat he maybe able to swap it to higher one for you.

Hank.

Thanks, Hank. Was just out there, but the bike wasn't at the dealer. It turns out that they are selling it on consignment for one of their mechanics -- this has been his bike since new. This should mean that it's well-maintained, I'd guess!

Eric the sales guy told me that the owner is pretty tall, and he was sure the seat was at least the standard seat, but they'll let me know when the mechanic has brought it to work so I can come out and see it in person and ask him about it. I'll definitely ask about lowered pegs as part of the deal.

The research I've done says this is a good price. The bike doesn't have ABS, but it comes with pretty much every other feature I want. Any other comments/suggestions much appreciated.

Welcome aboard and good luck with the purchase.

I have to agree with Hank on the seat, it looks to me like a low seat as well. You might try a high seat, the dealership might want to swap with you as the low seat is generally in more demand.

Let us know how you make out.

Great Looking bike...and the color is right on! That is a great price, too. I recently purchased a nearly identical bike for $5750, plus shipping. So you are getting a good deal. I have to agree with others that it looks like the low seat. Mine came with the high seat see this post (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=19749). I was able to buy/sell to get the one I wanted right here on this forum.

The more I ride mine, the more I think I have a keeper. Hope your deal works out. This forum is a wealth of information, too.

Thanks, for posting that link to your bike! I had admired its beautiful color :) , but hadn't seen that difference in the seat heights. The high seat is a must for me. Good to hear that I should be able to get that switched one way or the other.

And very reassuring to hear that it's a good deal. I'm so infatuated I just want to call the dealer back and say I'll take it, sight unseen, lol.

DocStrange welcome to the board and congrats on your potential bike. I had one just like it from new to 18,500 miles and I really liked it. Stick around and enjoy your stay.

Yep, definitely the lowered seat. I'm very curious to meet this mechanic "as tall as me", lol.
