Mollygrubber- it was hard but I think worth it: the deal that I am about to make is: first service free; second windshield free (incl. installation) and I can keep the sports windshield and they are giving me $4300 for my Honda as a trade in ($300 more than they wanted). I will sign on the dotted line tomorrow morning! Can't wait :D

Now I just need to figure out which top case to get as apparently the touring cases are not meant to stay permanently on the bike. I like their look though and find the bike more "beautiful" with cases. I need something to store my camera equipment in as I usually take photographs when on the road.

Again- I am thrilled that I have found this forum and got so many nice replies from you :)

Stef, congrats on negotiating such a good deal. Like Peter (mollygrubber), I was ecstatic just to get one at msrp, so there was no hesitation signing the paperwork. It came with the tall screen, and after about 1000 miles, I couldn't stand it anymore. I much preferred riding without a windscreen.

I'm confident you'll love your new bike and get many happy miles out of it. Lumpycam and Chitown are both members with an eye for photos. With some searching you'll find some wonderful shots of theirs. Lumpycam has a blog with some amazing photos that can be found here. I would link Chitown's website, but it seems to be under construction/renovation.

OUCH !. I feel so OLD at 61.

When I hit 60 last year and looked around, I decided not to participate in the aging thing. I teach MSF/Riders Edge motorcycle classes and NAUI scuba classes and still outswim 90 percent of the kids in their 20's =D>

My RR is also envied by a lot of the 20 something kids on sport bikes that I can easily catch in twisties.

Congratulations Steph,

Yesterday I wrote you an extensive and impassioned explanaition of why you should go ahead and buy an R1200 R, only to have my computer crash when I tried to post.

Luckily you came to the right conclusion on your own.

I picked up my 2010 on November 5 and so far only have about 1,100 miles on it. Most of my winter time has been spent adding farkles. A thorough search of this forum led me to conclude that a 22" Cee Bailey's windscreen would provide riding bliss when the stock tourng bracket is raised so that the shield tilts back a bit more than intended. I made up a bracket, explained in the thread Windshield Bracket, and when I installed the shield it was perfect.

I have also added:

NEP throttle lock
GS Hand Guards
Rear Fender extender (what you mean extender? there is no fender. That comes later)
A BMW police bike flashing LED brake light (in addition to the stock unit)
Screen in front of oil cooler
Pin's to make sure the saddle bags don't come off
RKA 19 Liter Shiloh Tank bag (my Nikon D80 fits sooo nicely in there)
Bob's kick stand enlarger
and more, still in the works.

I have been riding a 1995 K75 since it was new and never thought I would want another bike. But, I love my Roadster.

Welcome to the club.

Thanks for your kind wishes! I am very excited and today is the day that I will make a down payment...collection of the bike is on Mondy the 12th of April as I will be gone to Europe middle of next week for ten days, so I have to wait a bit longer :(
The only really shocking part here in Canada is the insurance...it costs so much more than in the UK where I lived for 18 years.

ka5ysy, I have been and still am an extreme skier and that has not been too good on my knees and back. That's the reason why I refer to being 45 - sometimes I feel like 105...
BTW I am also a long time scuba diver and can't wait starting this here in Vancouver. I am doing a dry suit course in a month as I am usually diving in warmer waters.

Re.: adding things to the bike: this has to wait for a little while but the only thing I want to get is a proper top case where my camera fits in. I am going to Munich next week (BMW country ;) ) and will be looking at the BMW ones. Not sure there is a plural in this word though as I have only found one top case from BMW that is meant for the R1200R :?

As far as a good storage device for camera/electronic equipment, I would suggest a Pelican case (1450 model is a good size). Chitown has one mounted on his factory rear rack (with some modification), you can probably find a picture on here somewhere. I have just bought one but need to purchase the rack first ($$$ - maybe you could add that to your bargaining). If you want one, get it online - they're horribly expensive in Canada.

There is only one BMW one. I didn't quite understand the comments about the sidecases not being intended for permanant use.. mine haven't been off the bike in 34,000 miles.

I'm not a big fan of topcases (and I've had them on other bikes) for a few reasons: (1) Makes it harder for me to get on/off the bike. Too tall to swing my leg over, and that means I have to sort of fish my right leg over the seat whilst jumping around a bit. (2) Too tempting to put a lot of weighty stuff in - moving the COG up much higher on the bike.. (3) They're ugly.

I use a detachable RKA tail-bag. It's small enough I can swing my leg over it, and it's not so big as to tempt me to load it up with weighty objects (has a flat-fixing kit and my SPOT in it at the moment, along with a few rarely used maps..) It's a quite inexpensive option.

(Not my bike, but the same bag..)

They're also nice since they come off the bike very easily (4 velcro fasteners) and can be used as a backpack. They come in several different sizes..

----------------------------------------------------------------------

One thought on the BMW tail-trunk.. it also requires the BMW tail-rack, which is optional and rather expensive since it requires replacing the bag-mounting-rails that came on the bike. The total cost is up there a bit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a semi-hard tail-trunk (mounts to the pillion seat) made by Axio that I bought thinking it would fit fine on the R12R. It fit fine at the dealer on a stock R12R with a stock seat. It doesn't fit so fine on my bike with a modified seat (Sargent - which moves the butt-cutout about 1" rearward) and a Kwikover under the rear of the seat.

It's another much less expensive option than the BMW top-case if you want something that is a hard-shell sort of thing that appears fairly waterproof. I can swing my leg over it also for mounting and dismounting the bike.

Thanks Deilenberger for the info.
Just phoned BMW Munich and asked them for the top case and how muchit would cost. 295 Euro incl. taxes (= Can$ 406; US$ 395) which seems much more reasonably priced than over here. It's a 28L top case. I see your point deilenberger with getting your leg over it though... more thinking to do.

Can someone explain more about this? A picture, perhaps?
