EWS Antenna Ring R12R 07

Post by 73516 »

I like many of us have had the recall antenna ring replaced on my 07 r12r. A month or so ago, out of the clear blue sky the bike failed to start. The battery was fully charged, (new battery 7/09) full lamps, on board computer booted up etc. I transported the bike to the dealer, upon arrival it started. The dealer conducted a diagnostic test and said the codes noted low voltage on the battery. He mentioned, there needed to be a certain level of volts before the bike would start, apparently it was a little low. He did a cranking test on the battery and it showed the battery was good, and sent me on my way. Yesterday, I went to start the bike and no go? I flipped the kill switch to make sure it I didn't bump it. The bike started but sounded like the started engaged in an unusual way. I shut it down and started it a time or two. I turned the key on again, and EWS displayed on the computer. Turning the key off and on again made the EWS display go away and the bike started. Is there chance the EWS antenna ring could be bad, or going bad? Has anyone else experienced this?

thanks

Jim

If you are still using the original battery, it's time to replace it.

EWS can also be displayed if the battery voltage gets low enough. Your symptoms aren't consistent with a bad EWS ring - they are consistent with a battery that is about to die on you (despite the dealers test on it.)

If it were me, I'd install an Odyssey battery (search this forum for how) and forget about it.

after I installed a new battery WESTCO I rode the r12r to town and went to work for 8 hours, came out and bingo, it wouldn't start. Same exact issue as the previous post. Trailer-ed the r12r to the dealer (160 miles) upon arrival the bike started......The diagnostic check showed nothing. The dealer looked further and eliminated the side stand switch and kill switch. Then they took tank off to look a the computer stuff and found that the section of the computer that controls the engine was defective. Sorry I do not have the precise name of the computer that failed, but it costs $800.00 plus labor (warrantied by 8 days yea). I failed to ask the ? why the diagnostic check didn't indicate the problem. Would anyone know the answer.?

The input I rec'd from everyone was most helpful, it helps a mechanically challenged owner like me to speak reasonably with the dealership staff.

A friend's F650GS had an unfixable stayed-running-in-gear-with-sidestand-down issue. The "resolution" was that the dealer applied a warning label to the dashboard. I assume this was a BMW-provided label. Isn't that amazing?
