Parabellum Scout or windscreen upgrade?

Post by RadRider »

I traded my 2005 R1200RT for a 2010 R1200R. I'm interested in setting it up for touring and trying to decide whether switching the sport screen for a larger one or going with the scout fairing. Any riders out there with the scout fairing that can shed some light on this :-k ?

RedRider - search is your friend. Yes and yes - and they already have. All you have to do is look for the info.

I have searched this and several other forums regarding this issue. There is plenty of info regarding the windscreens which I have found helpful. However, not much regarding the Parabellum Scout fairing other than looks and some general comments and not much detail regarding actual function. Is the scout fairing function actually that much better than the windscreens to justify the cost?

I only know one person personally who has the Scout on his R12R - and he loves it (paging Harry C.. paging Harry C..) He hasn't tried other shields, and with the variability in rider size/desires, really the only way to answer that is to try it out yourself. Be cheaper if you knew someone who would let you try theirs...

I didn't want to get into another fairing thread because as Don said we all expect different things from a fairing/windshield, and we've been over this many times (ad nauseam) before on this list. I like my Parabellum Scout,it gives me the weather protection I expected from a mid sized fairing and I like the way it looks on the bike (my bike, my money). I have a 12" screen for local riding in the hot weather and an 18" for long rides and wintertime. The fit and finish, I ordered mine painted, are first class. All the holes are drilled and the excellent hardware fits on without any effort.

I sat on Harry's bike at the National in WY and loved the entire effect of the scout fairing. Now I have one of my own. I am 5'8" but have 34" legs. I ordered the 18" screen and had problems with noisey air. I have cut it down 4 times trying to find clean air (2" at first the 1 " at a time.) Part of my problem is I like to be upright. Eventually I will get down to a 10 screen that I think looks very nice with the bike.

Production time is long for the Scout. If you order one, talk to Brenda for a realistic time frame. I would suggest you have them paint it. The cost is an additional $200 dollars. I ordered one in Feb last year and in June told them to send it unpainted because I was leaving on a trip. I paid $350 to have it painted this year. Perhaps I should not have told the painter if was off of my BMW. There is a lot of prep that goes into getting it paintable.

I have tried the Cee Bailey 18" and experienced turbulent and "noisy air" just off the top of my helmet and have a 20" on order. In the meantime, I'm using the sport screen which puts my head in clean air preferable to the 18" screen. Thanks for your valued input!

I think everyone experiences that with the CB if used with the stock touring mount. The mount is too upright. You need to tilt the screen back more - there are a number of threads about that, including one member who makes a block for under the mount to make it easy and cheap to do.

BTW - what's your actual name? Most people here are on a first-name basis.

I have the Scout on my 07 R12R and love it, just enough coverage to provide a bit of protection but doesn't take away from the overall look of the bike. I have a 10", 14", 18", and 20" screens. I acquired my used, but brand new, original owner didn't like the look, so I helped him with his dislike for the fairing, with $350.00 (I won).

For over a year I've been running with the Scout and 20" screen (10" in hot weather). I'm 6'1" with a 34" inseam and sit upright with bar-backs.

I like it WAY better than the Z-Technic screen I had for a while which had horrible buffeting. (Newer versions may be improved).

It takes 4 machine screws with nylock nuts to change screens: 5 to 10 minutes, unless you drop something down into the oil cooler area or it rolls under the wife's car to a point that you have to go get a broom handle to retrieve it and you vow to go to the hardware store to get a few spares to have on hand.

With the tall screen I look just over the top and the wind blast is on the upper part of my helmet. No buffeting and a very slight amount of turbulence.

I love the 10" screen in warm weather. The blast point is upper chest, enough to keep cool, but not so much to make it burdensome to hold onto the bars at speed as with the OEM sport screen. With the 10" screen my helmet rides in a very clean airstream.

I chose mine unpainted and am not at all bothered by having a black fairing on my Crystal Grey bike. Looks kinda retro. Sure, the up-close finish would be way better with paint, but my wallet is heavier without it.

I believe the Scout is designed by the same person who did the Rifle windscreen I had on my ST1100 and it worked very well too. The key, I suspect, is the serious amount of rake.

Radrider, you don't show where you're from, but if you're ever around northern California, you can try the Scout by PM'ing me.

I'll let you know when mine gets here. I did a lot of online research here and other places. Consensus is it functions well but disagreement on looks. I think it looks great (in photos). I ordered it a month ago and was told there's an 8 wk backlog. I'm hoping it gets here early July before I leave for Redmond. I'm 5'6" and ordered 14" screen.

I am in South Florida. I haven't seen any down here. Don't see many R1200Rs either. Coming from an RT I guess I need to get used to the naked concept. I will try the taller Cee Bailey first and see if it is sufficient for me. I am preparing the RR for the trip to Redmond in July. Sounds like the Scout fairing is not an option at this point due to the 8 week production.

Uh oh, another South Floridian. You should try and make your way out to Everglades Holiday Park on a Sunday morning. I like to get out there early around 8am and it starts gettin busy around 10am.

I have experimented with a Cal Sci shield at factory touring shield angle, did not like it all. Went back to the touring screen and got the Don C windshield riser which is amazing.

Heres a link to the thread where Don C created his riser on page 2 > viewtopic.php?f=20&t=19676

Ashveratu - How tall is your BMW touring wind screen for your "09 R1200R - without the mod?

With thanks,
