Transmission case cracked is it worth rebuilding?

Post by dc10bill »

is it worth while to rebuild 2004 1150rt-p with 100K that was OH'd @ 65K.

last month was broad sided (I went to intensive care/trama and therapy for the last 5 weeks still have at least another 4 weeks of home therapy for cracked pelvis and cracked ankel) Been riding 50+ years my most serious crash!

I removed farings today and found transmission case has major crack about 12" long at top to RH side where Suv hit. with the cracked case the rear wheel in not inline with front wheel

IS it worth rebuilding? paid $4200 4 months ago, just guessing by eBay prices less transmission around $1200 for the other parts?

Just hate to get another 1150rt-p and spent all the time as I did on this one doing all the mods

What kind of settlement did you get from the insurance company?

If it was me... I would not salvage it. I would think that you would spend a lot less time making small changes to a undamaged bike, then to rebuild this one. Plus, there may be more damage that you might not have discovered yet. Some of it may be subtle, and not show it self until after it is back together and has been ridden for a while. That uncertainty would drive me nuts.

There is a reason I feel like that.

I once hit a large animal carcass with my car (likely a cow... long story...). I hit it at about 70 MPH.

I pulled a lot of flesh out of the engine compartment and undercarriage (even found part of a hoof). Everything seemed OK. The car drove PERFECTLY fine. I took it to my mechanic when I got back to Iowa City, just to check it out. Everything was fine. I didn't think too much about it when I needed a wheel bearing a few months later (car had about 140K miles on it). Then it needed another one. Then another one. Then another. All of them were for the front left wheel. I got frustrated and tried several mechanics. None of the mechanics, that checked it out, could find what had been bent.

Sorry to hear about your accident... best wishes on your recovery.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

Thanks Doug for the input, I have found another rt-p for $3400 with approx the same milage, so I will purchase that one (if still advable Cycle Trader) and put the 2nd seat with the parts etc on that one, all of that is OK from wrecked one.

Looked more the entire transmission case is cracked totally around, crack starts at top oil service hole and can see crack extending to back side of starter on other side, crack is approx. 1/16" wide!

When M/C was taken from police storage yard home wife said oil was running out, now I know why.

Again thanks for the information, that's why I belong to such forms! Bill

Just a thought - if the ins co hasn't taken the bike and let you keep it,
there are a lot of salvagable and expensive parts that could be sold.

When a bike is hit hard enough to crack open the transmission case, the chances the swingarm, wheel, rear frame and even the front frame will also be bent/cracked. That kind of damage automatically totals the bike in my NJ shop. The insurance companies ALL gladly do so, so the next owner(s) will not be injured/killed when the hidden cracks or weakness causes another serious accident. The small potential for loss of life gamble is just NOT worth it, and no structural parts are salvaged for reuse. The pic below gives one future possibility.
