Just out riding around

Post by iowabeakster »

Finally, the monsoon rains have abated. For the last number of days, I've been out just riding around and generally enjoying myself. I've probably ridden close to 600 miles in the last few days...and gone absolutely NO WHERE. If fact, I was on some road I had never been on before and turned on the GPS (just to make sure I didn't get stuck on a gravel road). When the GPS got itself initialized... It said NO WHERE was just ahead.

That was yesterday.

This ride report is about today. I took many of these pictures today, but some I took on earlier rides. I hope you don't mind. It's hard to take a whole bunch of pictures... and enjoy the ride... and get home in time for work... all in the same day. This is what I saw today...even if the pictures were not taken today.

Headed East...

The first small town East of Iowa City is West Branch. West Branch is known for one thing. It is the home of Herbert Hoover. Everyone's favorite depression era president!

Here's Hoover's house.

Image

I dig this statue of Isis. We're big fans of Isis around here. She is the goddess of fertility/life.

Image

The scenery around here is what it is. If it bores you, that's fine with us, stay away. There is definitely one good thing about the Iowa countryside, there isn't much traffic.

The scenery pretty much looks like this... Corn, beans, and hay

Image

I generally try not post food pictures. I must post this one.

Image

Actually, that last picture is maybe my favorite picture this year. It's so simple. It is almost like a child's crayon drawing. I really like the one animal on the horizon (left side). It might be hard to see on these small, low-res versions of the pictures.

Like I said before, one good thing about Iowa is the lack of traffic. The farmers can slow you down a bit. Not much tractor traffic today, but I did have to dodge plenty of sprayer-rigs. I SO MUCH want to ride underneath one some time.

Image

When Boxer (Phil) rode up to Cedar Rapids a couple years ago, he asked me, "where does all of that corn go?"

I told him, "to the grain elevator."

He asked, "what does a grain elevator look like?"

I didn't know how to describe it. There are many different styles. Some are concrete, some are metal, some are round, some are square, some are tall, some are squat. :-k All I could say was, "the grain elevator is the biggest thing you will find in the itty-bitty towns."

I love industrial, mechanical, form-follows-function things. Maybe, that's why I like my motorcycles naked. Maybe, that's why I like grain elevators.

Image

My bike is on the road in front of this one, just ahead of the cab of the semi. Ya probably can't even see it.

Image

This one has a big open air storage area. The long conveyer leads out to a big ring out in the middle of the field.

Image

Image

Enough of the grain elevators already...

I made it all the way east to the big muddy river. Just before crossing the river I stopped for a water and cigarette break. I chatted with Ken and Pam. Ken got a bite as we were chatting. Unfortunately, the line broke.

Image

The pelicans were having better luck. They were also much more aggressive than Ken and Pam.

Image

I crossed over into Illinois at Sabula, IA. I like that crossing. The road goes for a mile or so through the swampy back waters of the river.

Looking south down the river...

Image

Looking up the river...

Image

I'm not sure if this is where I would like to be buried. It did seem peaceful, though.

Image

The inevitable church picture... Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

Image

This is the Cedar River...

Image

Time to get home and get to work...

My bike, in weeds, by a windmill...

Image

Zoinks...I forgot this one...

Well done! Thanks for sharing.

I would not be so concerned about all those miles and miles endless fields, here in NJ, that is almost another planet. :)

That's the best kind of trip... riding and going nowhere.

Thanks for taking us along.

I like it! Tons.

Why Isis? Huh? Why the veil? Is she hiding her eyes, sort of wink wink, from the fertility stuff?

There is a thread over on ADVrider Show Us Your Great Plains Pictures or something like that, that if you haven't seen it you should.

Thanks guys,

I also forgot to write about the greatest thing that I saw on that ride. I was going through a small town and there was a man and his young daughter selling sweet corn out of the back of their pick-up truck. The little girl (6-7 years old) was standing at the edge of the roadway trying to attract customers. She was holding an ear of corn high above her head with both hands. It looked like she was head-banging...but with her whole body. A wild whole body spasm, as it was. It was priceless.

I bursted out laughing. My earplugs and helmet seem to make the laughter much, much louder. The sound of my own laughter startled me severely. That happens once in a while, but can never happen often enough.

Does anybody esle startle themselves laughing while riding, or is it just me?

John,

Isis...

Her mythology started in the Egyptian culture and was spread throughout Greco-Roman empires. She was worshiped even by Christians. Not only human fertility, Isis is strongly symbolic of the fertility of all life. She is conflated with water, the weather, and the harvest. In other words... Isis is agriculture...Isis is sustenance. Isis is representative of all that is Iowa. We also like boobies clearly visible through sheer fabrics.

I'm not sure about the veil... I like it though...because it just makes the statue mysterious.

Yep, I've seen the great plains thread in ADVrider. There are some great shots in that thread! In that thread, there is a map the shows technically what constitutes the the Great Plains. Iowa is not included. As flat as the land is here ... the horizon is almost never more than a half-mile away. Pretty soon, the horizon will be the first row of corn along the roadway.

This made me laugh again. The amount of involuntary verbal interaction I had with no one but my helmet became glaringly apparent when I hooked up my Autocom with my kid riding pillion. He would catch me mooing at cows, telling old punchlines, insulting cagers on cell phones, and singing bits of weird songs until I realized I was on a party line.

"Give it a rest Dad."

oops. There is someone else here!

Nice pictures Den,

Those places are familiar to me. I've ridden around that area a fair number of times. The steel bridge at Lansing made me a nervous wreck back in '08. If the wobbling tires on the steel grating wasn't enough, it was thunderstorming and all wet.

Is the last picture County Road C-9Y (a.k.a. Balltown Road), north of Dubuque? It sure looks like it. CR C-9Y is probably my favorite road that I've found in Iowa.

I'm really not sure what road that is but I think you are correct, I was just wandering around checking out the views, and really enjoyed it, if you get a chance take a run up the river road aways, I think you will like the ride, Den
