First service question

I'm coming up on my first service and had a few questions.

1) what's involved in the service?
2) is it necessary that the dealership perform it or can I do it myself?
3) how much does it cost?

in new york it costs about $300.00.
i'd just let the dealer do the first service. not sure its really necessary after that.
probably the most significant part is the valves.
...
i doubt it is a legal requirement to have the dealer do it.
btw, the break in oil shouldn't stay in there too long.

1. Here's the official 600-mile run-in checklist.
2. No, you can do it, but I would buy the supplies from the dealership. Keep the paperwork.
3. It varies: ~$200 to ~$500.

Just had the 600 mile service done on my 2009 last Wednesday. Cost was around $350 with synthetic oil. Besides the oil change the valves were adjusted. Makes a big difference being able to go above 4k (or so) revs.

Engine oils of API classification SF or better. Engine oils of ACEA classification A2 or better. BMW Motorrad recommends not using synthetic oils for the first 10,000 km. Please do not hesitate to contact your authorised BMW Motorrad dealer if you have any questions relating the choice of a suitable engine oil for your motorcycle.

I'm beginning to wonder if I should have waited until the 12,000-mile service, instead of 6,000-mile, to switch to synthetic.

10,000kMeters = ~ 6,000 miles. Not to worry. And my feeling is - switch when the engine stops using significant amounts of oil. I did (switched at 6k miles) - and oil use continues to decrease very slightly as the miles pile on.

ALSO - big clue they're talking metric - what "10,000 km" means is ten-thousand-thousand meters. It wouldn't make sense for 10-thousand-thousand miles.. (AKA 100k miles).

Yep, was just a heads-up to Mark, who wrote he switched to synthetic at the 600-mile service — that's probably too early, according to BMW.

I did my own, following the checklist and the factory SVC manual. Saved receipts for chemicals and the few tools I had to buy. I covered everything except checking codes. There is no way in heck the local dealer (who can't decide if they are going to continue being a BMW dealer or not) is going to touch this bike. Next nearest dealer is in Indy, 2.5 Hrs away. So I'm on my own. Saving for a GS911 code reader now.
