IF HEADLIGHTS ON 1150 RT DOES NOT WORK

Post by coenfourie »

If your headlights do not work, and your HI beam indication light is on when switching your light selector to "HI BEAM", your problem is that the negative wire that feeds both the low and high beam head lights has probably burned off.
There are no fuses in the headlight circuits that I could find.
1. So first check if there is +12 volt on your headlight bulb when the lights are switched on. (test directly on the bulb)
2. Check your headlight bulbs for continuity. (you can do this without removing the bulbs)
3. Take a seperate wire and connect negative straight from your battery to the earthing clip of your headlight, your headlight should now work.
If this check out OK, your negative wire has burned off, probably inside your headlight.
To repair this you will have to take the whole front light section out.
The high beam bulb (H7) socket arrangement is of very poor design, this is exactly where the negative push on connector has probably burned off.

There is one other likely possibility....the overtightened factory nylon ties under the light bucket that with time and handlebar motion weaken and break the wires inside the protective covers. It is one of the litle quirks on our bikes. CyleRob posted a pic of the offenders.
