Need some help finding a top case

Post by seanx820 »

When I bought my bike it thankfully had side panniers, but unfortunately they are not big enough for may Macbook pro laptop (15 inch) that I use for work (I am a computer engineer). I am looking for some pics and what you guys may have, maybe something not too expensive, but hopefully a hard case... I want to be able to lock it so I can go inside stores, I am an all year rider :) Obviously I will back up my computer, I am just looking for a top case.

Do a search on 'Givi' and then on 'Shad' and you will get an evening worth of reading (with pictures) on top cases.

I mounter a Givi E340 on the Beemer rack.

those look pretty slick too, is yours removable? (something I want because I like to ride naked) How do you hook it on your bike? There seems to be no details on pelicans website...

Two ways to mount a removeable and lockable Pelican box.

http://cariboucases.com/store/?name=Home
...or...
http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/5342

I have the twistedthrottle setup, but it took some fabrication on my part to make it work. Their system is not compatible with the R1200R's factory topcase rack and panniers.

People have been known to just bolt Pelican boxes to the factory rear rack.

I don't have the factory rear rack, where can I buy that? It looks like the least ugly rack mount anyway, also on the cariboucases.com are those for GS, not r1200r? are we compatible with gs?

Caribou doesn't make a mount that directly fits the R1200R. You would have to fabricate something.

Twisted throttle sells an aluminum rack that will bolt to the tail of the R1200R, and the Pelican kit bolts to that. Problem is...the Twisted Throttle rear rack will eliminate your pannier mounts.

Rack: http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/pr ... w/3053/78/

Case kit: http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/pr ... /6556/855/

The case locks with a padlock.

Total cost = $360.

A thread where I installed my Pelican, using the stock rack so that I would still have the pannier mounts:

Simple 'SEARCH' on E340 returns this; viewtopic.php?f=20&t=21981&p=192727&hilit=e340#p192727

Yes, those mounts give you the tail rack. The BMW cases just clip right in, with no additional hardware needed.

Any other case will need an adapter plate of some sort -- you'll need to figure that out once you pick a case.

BTW: This is a nice case, with the hardware you need...

Just as an alternative, in case anyone may find it useful.
I really did want the bmw vario case ( made for GS) because of the adjustable volume and the key thing. And because it looks good :) So I bought one, and made an adaptor plate to be able to use it on the R. This was my first ever milling job, and as every prototype, it is perhaps not perfect. (visually). But it works just fine, I´m sure it is at least as strong as the original bmw adaptor plate for the GS (well, actually I believe it is stronger). The plate itself is made out of 6mm aluminum sheet. The holding elements are milled out of alumec (high strength heat treated aluminum alloy used in the tooling industrie ) and are held to the plate with double M6 steinless screws. The case fits as accurately as can be, and the original rack needed no chopping or drilling to mount it. I just removed the decorative aluminum-coloured plastic cover.
There are also 3 plastic pieces underneath the aluminum sheet, that are not seen on the photo.
And the loops on the sides are for the case I need to tie a tent or something on top of the box. Haven´t actually tried it yet.

The plate itself I had anodized, as for coating. The alumec does not need any corrosion protection, and they sayed that it will not look good after anodizing, so those elements remained as they are.

As a result, It was relatively easy to do, and could aswell be done by just using a stick saw, drill and a file. Well, and a thread cutter etc..

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects handlebars to the saddle.

well, the seat came from Touratech :)
I´m located in Estonia ( a tiny place in northern Europe) and we have no Touratech representitive over here. So I ordered from Touratech Nordic (Sweden), but it is available on all European Touratech sites I guess.
Here you go: http://www.touratech.com/shops/001/inde ... 892d14c321

I visited a motorcycle fair in Finland this february, and placed the order in the Touratech box, If I remember correctly I payed 400€. They offered 3 months testing period and and option to return the OEM seat. In this case they would had refunded 100€. (pardon the grammar if I misexpressed - this sentence was a hard one :)

Anyhow, It is made by Kahedo and it is much better then the original. It provides a lot more contact surface, therefore the body weight feels less to carry. It is the high model you see on the photos. I must say, that the Touratech seat looks somewhat lower quality than the BMW comfort seat.
And it is built on the BMW saddle body.

Pic of fenda Extenda. I seem to remember just cleaning inside of fender, putting on double sided stickey tape, drilling two holes and running in two SS screws. It does keep mud and stuff off oil cooler, and I've been down a few dirt roads. It's been on for about 20K miles.
