Wiring assistance needed...

Post by aja1739 »

OK... so I am pretty sure I finally figured out which wire on my front-end is causing the bike to completely lose power when the handlebars are turned to the right. After several lapses of logic and pure wild goose chases, I think it is the wire that attaches to the center of the... oh, hell... see the picture below...

I am assuming it is directly linked to the key mechanism, since when I bend/straighten it in just the right way I can get the power to go completely off - just like turning off the key.

What I need help with are the following things:
1. Does anyone know how to detach this wire so that I can work on it off the bike?
2. Does anyone know if there is a way to remove the wires from the plastic wire harness/plug? I'd like to re-wrap the wires once I fix whatever problem there is, and it would be ideal if I could use shrink-wrapping without having to cut and re-splice the wires.

If anybody knows anything about this, or can help with my questions, I'd be most grateful. Thanks in advance, everyone - and Happy Fathers' Day to all the dads out there!

Got it. After a bunch of Internet searching, I discovered the set-screw under the red loc-tite. Loosened it and the ignition/light switch came right out. But like a dumba$$, I just had to take it apart. Didn't realize there were a bunch of springs and loose parts in there. #-o No idea how to put it back together, but it's a bit of a moot point, since I think the wiring problem is right at or inside the switch assembly. Looks like $103.68 + tax will get me a new one. :-/

No way to repair same. Buy a replacement from your stealership.

It is a very common problem with the oilheads. Either the zip-ties at the front or the connectors of the key switch ...

Seems like us old guys could take a lesson you. I would have done just as you have except I would have destroyed something in the process. I take it that the break is in the group of wires as they enter the switch?

LOL! Oh, I'm not absolutely positive i didn't mess something else up in the process! ha ha. Before I found the article about the set-screw, I was all ready to try to pry the damned thing out with a screwdriver. Luckily, I had at least a little sense and said to myself, "Why don't I stop until I really know the right way to do this..." Of course, in the end, I wound up having to replace the part, anyway. Oh well...

The bigger issue I still don't have a good answer for is how to remove and replace individual wires in a wire harness. I'd like to do that so that I can put a solid wrap around each bundle without doing the spiral tape wrap thing, or having to cut and re-splice all the wires after getting the covering over them. :?

I'm just hoping and praying that I haven't screwed up any other wiring, or messed up the fuel lines, or the oil cooler lines, or God knows what else. Guess worrying about it won't do any good. All I can do is order the part, put it in, and see how it all works. I'll keep you all posted.
