Broken side bag latch.

Post by Mirky87 »

As I was ridin' home from work on my 05 R1150R, I heard a loud thud behind me. Looked in my mirror & my side bag fell off. After further inspection, the locking mechanism on the side of the bag that locks it to the rack has broken off. Does anyone know if there's a repair for this or do I have to search for a new bag?

Thanks

You'll have to replaced the lock mechanism.

you can buy them seperately from the BMW after-market suppliers.

It's not the orange tab on top of the bag. It's on the side of the bag towards the bike. It flips up to grab onto the rack.

I've had three of those latches break and it pisses me off that they used strong metal for the rest of the mechanism, but went cheap on the part that actually holds the bag on the bike. Like riceburner said, you'll have to buy the entire "multi-function" latch assembly, as the single failed part is not available as an individual item. When my last bag fell off last fall (I noticed it going under the front of a 5-series BMW car at 70MPH), I was lucky to find a full bag as a replacement on eBay - check the used parts places and you may find an entire bag for less than what BMW charges for a replacement "multi-function" latch.

If I can managed to dis-assemble the latch mechanism to get the broken one out, I will have a custom replacement made at a machine shop using REAL metal; not the cheap pot-metal! But it's a complicated mechanism...

I actually had one of mine rebuilt several years ago. It's pretty labor intensive, you'll have to saw the pivot pins to get it apart, etc. We made the hook out of three pieces of T-6 aluminum and welded them together. It will never break again, but the right side will. If you do any production I will buy a couple of them.
Cheers!
