i just installed a ypipe on my '03 r1150r instead of the cat. i feel lots more heat coming from down there than before. i thought it would make the bike run cooler,,,,,explain please...........................thanx

Did you keep the O2 sensor and coding plug?

If you have any misfiring due to changing exhaust dynamics, some of the charge could now be burning in the pipes.

Also, i think you have an AF-XIED, if you do, the cat should not be oxidizing by-products. That should have kept it cooler.

roger, no misfiring, an occasional small pop on decel. the heat, i know, is ambient and am just surprised. it pulls like a tractor and runs great at 7 blips on the af-xied. at 8, it popped too much on decel, i figured gas was igniting in the pipe. i will try some exhaust wrap for the y pipe and see if that cuts down on the ambient heat. purportedly, wrap increases heat exit speed out the exhaust which cools intake. we'll see. i don't see another solution, i like the setup and don't want to go back. thanx again roger.

Are you running the OE 'muffler'??

If so, then all the gases that would have been slowed down in the catalyser are now being slowed down and 'gathered' in the, rather restrictive, OE muffler can (ie it's NOT a straight though).

That trapped gas will heat up the can and make the exhaust gases themselves where they exit the can hot enough to melt plastic.

after not getting any definitive info from thermal coating vendors as to what percent their products would heat-block, i wrapped the y pipe with cobra wrap yesterday. afterwards, added 3 coats of black silicone paint on advice from a former Buell owner. heat is noticebly less, in fact less than the ceramic coated headers. problem solved, and i'm very happy...........
