HEED crash bars for a R1150r

Had an accident on Friday that messed up my crash bars (SW Motech).

I had to deliberately put the bike down to avoid crashing into a truck with a plow on the front that was on the wrong side of the road cleaning up rocks after last weeks rain.

I was looking for an alternative to the SW Motech since mine didn't fit well and it does not fully protect the head covers. There are not many alternatives now but I found a HEED crash bars on ebay. They look OK but asking questions of the guys in poland it seems like parts of them need to be removed the access the head covers.

Anyone experienced with HEED or any other crash bar that's still available please let me know

On the Wunderlich site they offer 2 crash bars sets, claiming that all maintenance (including valve adjustment) can be done without removing the crash bar.

I don't a crash bar but replaced the standard plastic valve covers /cylinder protectors with these aluminium covers

I do not have the orange spark plug covers

Crash bars weigh a lot. Just get a nice set of covers.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had the BMW plastic covers on and they are OK for a tip over but both sides were destroyed when I fell off last year.

When the bike went down last week and the crash bars were bent and the head cover on the right side had quite a bit ground out of it. The important thing was the bike was protected and still ridable. I do a lot of riding to remote areas and need to be able to ride out after a fall. A smashed head cover would prevent this. That's why I am a fan of crash bars.

i have the motech-love them. they are big heavy. and yes, sometimes difficult to line up the fit. but. I wouldn't like to be without them. and theyre not in the way AT ALL for maintenance.

i think youd be fine whatever you end up with.

Interested in any photos you have of the SW Motech engine guards post-crash.

I recently bought the SW Motech R1150GS guards as part of my Rockster scrambler adaptation, and I'm interested in the real life crash results.

Yes the bars are heavy (have not weighed them yet) but at least the weight is carried low. I'm expecting lower speeds crashes in gravel and dirt, and want the additional protection.

I've had Wunderlich bars on my '02 R, after it's first collision .
It was a pain in the ass to get installed, hasn't been removed ever and it does not get in the way of any maintenance on the bike .
It has mounting points for driving lights as well .

I will publish pictures of the bike and crash bars when I get a chance. Its still at the dealers.

The repair estimate came in at $6500 so I expect the bike going to be written off. Pity cos after 90k miles I have just figured out how to make it run well.

The bar right side that took the brunt on the crash bent up several inches. Initially I was thinking this was not so good, but in retrospect it saved the frame. If the crash bar didn't bend there is a good chance the attachment point to the aluminum frame would brake. Maybe that why mild steel is used to make crash bars.

Wow, they are expensive in the USA. The same crash bar like I posted a few posts up, but in Germany cost € 249 = $ 265. I do not think the shipping cost will be that much to exceed $ 369.95 .
I prefer to stay on this side of the Atlantic. It's a lot cheaper.
