The Sisyous seem to be the most direct route to get south fast and avoid weather complications. Does anyone have experience with this stretch of road in April.

I drive over this pass every two weeks or so in the Spring through the Fall and once a month in late Fall through the end of Winter. I think it's highly unlikely you'll have any trouble at all in April -- I wouldn't hesitate to do it. Make sure you check out one of the road cams at the following site:

Click on one of the camera icons at the bottom of the Oregon border. Both show views of I5 at Siskiyou Pass.

Siskyou pass
Thanks
My gut feeling was that it would be OK but the reassurance is nice to hear from someone who does it often. I am looking forward to the view of Shasta.
We will check the webcams before we travel. Looking forward to getting out of this Oregon Rain Rain Rain!

The section of I5 from Ashland to Shasta Lake/Redding is by far the most scenic part of the entire freeway. The views of Shasta are superb -- especially when heading South from the Yreka area. I drive it all the time and still stop on occasion to take photographs of Shasta or the rock formations at Castle Crag.
Siskiyou I-5 travel
Riding up to Oregon from L.A. this weekend. Looks nasty through the Siskiyous Saturday, but no snow on Sunday, when I'll choose either Yreka/I-5 or Eureka/US101 and the coast.
Wish me luck.

I drove over the pass last night about 7:00PM -- weather and road was clear. But it rained most of the day today (Saturday) -- though it cleared in the early evening. Tomorrow's weather is supposed to be pretty nice. I'd look out for early-morning ice. Probably will be fine later in the day -- check the cameras.
I-5 Oregon California
OK,
Rode up from L.A. this weekend in good weather (for early Feb.), roads were snow-free, weather was clear & cold. Pavement was dry in NorCal and over Siskiyou Summit; wet in the shady Oregon passes 'tween state line and Medford. Felt a bit of tire slide in those tight 50mph turns on the Oregon side, but it was cold (as were tires) yesterday.
So, April should be easy, barring a sudden cold/snow event at that time. Wear your heated vest/gear, watch out for trucks, enjoy the many curves, pray for sun and dry pavement.

Oregon
edit - Oh, don't forget to check both TripCheck (http://www.tripcheck.com) and the Medford Fuel site (http://www.medfordfuel.com) for road cams, weather, and road construction info.
