moving the charcoal canister

Well the operation was a success. The can has been relocated. It was a fair amount of work, but the relusts are worth it to me. I have a cleaner look (I always hated the look of that can), and the peice of mind not concerned about a gasoline odor. Now I can mount that new hugger I purchased.

You have both full size cases. The RR left case has a cut out for the muffler. Yours does not. Did the individual you purchased this setup from provide any other hardware? That "thingy" is part of the exhaust lowering kit and bag bracket to accomodate the left saddlebag...

Does anyone know where this bracket be purchased????

I think this bracket is a custom made piece, not a purchased item. You can purchase the bmw brackets if you need to relocated the bag mount for use with the full size bag. Others have also bolted on some pieces to the bag so that the original mounting point can be used. You will still need to lower or remove the muffler though.

I've got the plate that is used for the full size bag installed already, it's just butt ugly IMO, I like this bracket better.

I went the cheap route on the exhaust can issue, AutoZone had a good selection of tailpipes Seems to surge less as a result?

First thing that I asked my sales person before I bought my R was, "What the heck is this thing...a single-serve coffee maker or something?!" He quickly replied with a laugh and "No, it's a California-can."

Well, being that I live on the complete opposite side of the continent, I have no need nor a care for this hideous eyesore. I can go on and on about this thing, but I'll leave it at a quote by comedian Drew Carey..."Screw the grandkids, I'm cold NOW!!"

I want to toss the Cali-can for good. My main concern is what the LONG TERM effects on the R itself may be. Has anyone who has removed it had ANY quirks?? If I get the green light I will remove it by the end of the afternoon! I just love my R and don't want it to get hurt mechanically in the long run.

Charcoal canister equipped vehicles have fuelcaps with a check valve to allow air to enter easily, but not exit. Air that wants to exit is forced thru the vent line into the charcoal canister where fuel vapors are absorbed by the charcoal granules. The 1150R's fuelcap has air pressure release capability by nature of it's spring loaded pivoting filler cap that pushes down on the round inner capsule with the thick rubber sealing gasket. It emulates a poppet blow-off valve. Non canister 1150R bikes may have the same cap for economy reasons, but pre-emissions vehicles had simple 2-way pinhole vent "systems", with no check valve.

The solenoid valve allows the manifold vacuum to purge the canister granules, where the vaccum line from the solenoid connects to, not the fueltank. The purging make-up air comes from the canister drain line and vent line to the fueltank.

I think it's a great system, not for it's GreenPeace tree-hugging attributes, but for it's symbiotic nature while efficiently handling total odor control, expelled fuel vapor recovery and re-use - - - without hurting engine power, driveability or fuel economy. The Motronic trims the fuel injection rate if the charcoal is rich with condensed fuel vapors like a black bike parked in full, day-long Texas Summer Sun would generate. The only power it uses is the miniscule amount to power the solenoid coil.
Every USA gas powered car/truck has a similar but more sophisticated system, and we never smell not even a hint of gasoline from our cars . . . do we?

BMW don't even put them on the bikes they ship down under..so it's not needed at all.

I think it's a California thing..there's even wasted space in the right system case because of it...geees..why do we all have to suffer.

DJ, that very thing occurred to me a while back. I think if we bought the right RT case we'd get that space back. The RT doesn't have the canister mounted there so it follows the cases wouldn't have that cutout.
I have ABS, so there's no relocating the thing. I saw a picture of how one clever rider delt with the thing. He painted it bright blue and put one of those red NOS stickers on it. Got some looks I bet.

That's interesting...I'll be checking the next RT right case that I see.
