Advice needed - children's helmet

Post by dsimon9 »

Hello:

I am in the market for a child's helmet. Visiting the local stores has been a fruitless exercise. The Shoei xs seems to fit, but it is obviously too heavy for her (her head wobbles). She is almost 6 years old.

So, any overall advice, i.e. brand names, suggestions, places (probably online) where they can be purchased, etc... Also suggestions on how best to approach her first ride. She is excited about it, so I don't want to spoil the experience.

I can place special orders at some of the local stores, but if the helmet does not fit I will be required to pay a re-stocking fee, and in one case, you buy you keep it.

Thanks in advance.

check out helmet harbor (http://www.helmetharbor.com) - they have street helmets in kids sizes. Also look at motorcross helmets (dot approved of course).

I bought a HJC CL-14Y for my boys to wear. It's smaller and about half the weight of my Arai. It's a decent helmet though. I bought mine from M.A.W. (Not a particularly good buying experience) But it was cheap, I paid $75 for it. Cycle Gear here on the west coast carrys them, and I'm sure others. If you don't have the back rest, buy the Kids Harness for her, it will help her feel secure back there to have a good grip on dad.

My son started out at 6. He is on his 2nd Nolan. I wear a Nolan N100 as well.

He wore a Nolan medium size open face (N40) for a few years, and wanted a flip face this time so the Autocom mike was protected.
I picked up a new N100 black from bikebandit.com.
They offer a 10% AMA discount on all products.

Are you sure what size you need? This is most important.

I agree that HJC makes a great lower priced helmet also. Especially for growing kids.

Reminds me. I have a red medium Nolan N40 to get rid of.
