locking rear seat trunk?

An old thread in the Accessories forum went dead on this, so I thought I'd see if anyone can exceed my humble Google ability and answer this in the positive.

Does anyone make a trunk replacement for the rear seat? Not something soft like the Ztechnik, but hard, tall and key-able. I've seen them without locks and for the GS, but nothing for the R. Sure seems like such a handy no brainer - easier than a tank bag or lugging system cases for a few odd ends - that I keep thinking somebody must make one.

Saw one on a japanese web site that was a black plastic hump that replaced the rear seat.

I saw this rear seat bag seemed interesting it looked like it might fit your needs I'm thinking of this myself for small items and stuff instead hauling around the systems cases...............hirschg

Black plastic hump would be just the ticket if it locks. I'll scrounge around further - let me know if you recall how you came across it. Crazy complicated internets...

I don't think he was looking for a Ztechnik case. I am also interested in a lockable seat cowl. I want a solo look and also would like the extra storage. Not something like the package tray that the Rock's come with. I'm really looking for a rear seat base so I could make my own out of fiberglass. The only way I could see to make it lock with the bikes key would be a latch that would be inaccessible when the seat is actually on the bike. If someone makes one it sure would save alot of work and probably look alot better

can't you use a Rockster "tea-tray" rear seat reaplacement as your base?? I would have done this already with one of mine, but I'm not good with fibre-glass.


If you want a ready made item, have a look at getting hold of a DOKEN rear unit - no-one yet has managed it...

Did something on my own to put a waterproof in case it rains. So far it had been useful to put in odds and ends as well as tyre repair kit, first aid box when I go riding.

A friend of mine once told me that I should mass produce it for bikers, since it can fit any bike with a seat-belt. Any views?

You can buy bags like that here in the UK for: they're marketed as "Chain cases" for our security chains. Not a bad idea, and nice and small - but I wouldn't think they were waterproof.

I really dig that rear compartment from Japan. By my calcs (actually xe.com) the case would cost $673 not counting the shipping to the US. Looks like I will be sticking with my Givi tail.

Did anyone look into the possibility of a group buy?

That rockster tail is pretty slick. You'd think someone would latch onto that manufacturer and work out a distributor in the US.

I've also wondered how hard it would be to find a domestic fabricator willing to do something similar? If you used the silver back plate from the rear seat compartment as your starting point, all you'd have to do is build a box on top of that with some kind of locking lid.
