Who Needs a GS? Take II

Post by Lost Rider »

I posted this over at AVDRider, and though I'd share it here too.

I'm at it again out on a trip, riding, fishing, camping, this time riding 2-up.
Since I enjoyed Arkansas so much on my last trip a few weeks ago I figured I'd just start this one by heading that way again.

We left Chicago on Tuesday morning.

Image

Lovely Traffic

Image

The first night, at Lake Wappapello, MO. 469 miles.

Image

The first fish, and by far the largest still, caught by my trusty fishing partner, Lindsay.

Image

Mmmm, dinner.

Image

Image

The next day, we continue to heading south.
Image

Mammoth Spring, AR

We ended up at Sylamore Creek campground, it was perfect.

It was a great spot, I payed for two nights wanting to explore the area with a base camp. Little did I know, just before dark a couple in a car came and set up their tent right next to mine! In a empty frikin' campground! Of course they had a little barking dog, and young child. I couldn't believe it, so I turned up the speakers, set the bottle of Jack on the table, and just tried to be annoying, but they payed no attention and set up anyway.
Some fukin people.
Image

After I was over the butt crevice next to me, and was relaxing next to the fire, maybe 11PM, a massive RV bus, pulling a massive trailer, with a car following pull's up, and takes 15 minutes to park. After finally shutting down the big diesel engine, my blood pressure starts to go down, but oh no they have to have AC, so the generator starts, 2 dogs, 2 kids, 4 adults get out and the mega 10,000 watt light goes on.
hoot. I HATE them.
By this time I had no Jack left, so instead of getting myself in trouble I went to my tent.

Back on the road, it only took a few minutes of this to forget about the camp site episode.

Image

Somewhere around Mountain View, AR.

Image

Image

Image

This guy came over to say hello.

Image

We searched 3 or 4 campgrounds, and ended up at the Delaware Recreation site on Lake Dardanelle.
A Corps of Engineer's park, and the price was right. Free!
Off the beaten path, on the water, no camp sites to the left, the one on the right a good 70 yards or so away, with tree's blocking. Now this is good.

Image

Image

Image

After a dreadful trip to Wal-Mart we had some fresh foods, a side case will keep something cold overnight with a bag of ice. :1drink

Image

The weather held true to it's promise of isolated thunderstorms. Yeah, isolated over us for about 2 hours, but the new tent also hold true to it's promise of being 100% waterproof.

Image

After the rain, the fishing really picked up. We caught plenty of fish all evening, keeping what we were going to eat. A few Blue Gill, a Small-mouth, and another catfish. Sorry no fish pics, didn't take any during the fishing.

Some fish with some fire-baked potatoes

Image

Image

The next day I dropped the bags to head out and explore the area.

Image

Image

Mt. Nebo State Park

Image

We were able to watch a thundercloud move over the mountains, very cool to watch, from a distance.
Image

Fun!

Image

She made me do it. Ohhh take a pic of the Pony! Take one!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Time to hit the dirt. This time I was armed with a Arkansas Atlas & Gazetteer.

Image

Let the water crossing's begin! OK, it's really just a puddle..

Image

This is no puddle, though she walked across this one.:1drink

Image

More great "roads"

Image

Um, yeah.
Image

After a day of riding we head back to camp, picking up some bait on the way. Great fishing on Lake Dardanelle I say. We caught dinner again, a mix of blue gill and catfish.

Image

This time we had red beans and rice, along with some corn bread I made in the pan with the fish.

Image

This morning we packed up and head out to the Ozark National Forest to locate a backwoods camp-spot I had marked on a previous trip. The plan was to camp in the backwoods over the weekend to avoid the holiday crowds.

Image

After going about 12 miles down this road, we found out it doesn't go through, like the map says.

Image

No really, the road just dumped me into this. Riding through thorn bushes sucks!

Image

Image

Nice to be back on a "road"!

Image

And what a great road.

Image

Image

I had to find another route, this wasn't going to work for me....

Image

Image

Success! Here's the spot, we took a nice swim, then I did a little fly fishing.

Image

I wish I'd have taken a picture of the 2 fish I caught with my fly-rod. They were the smallest blue gill ever. Maybe 3 inches. :rofl
The trout could be seen, but wanted nothing to do with me. The water was pretty low.

Image

Image

Basically we were in a perfect spot, at least we thought so until the sky started turning dark and there was thunder.
I might be a little crazy, but I have no delusions as to how much I can do with my R1200R with Coni-Attack tires. We were at least 10 miles from any
pavement, and most of the ground was packed dirt that would turn to impassable red mud. We jumped on and starting making our way to pavement, quickly. I didn't want to get stuck here since I only had 1.5 days of food for 2.

On the way out my bike needed a nap. :eek1 Low speed, no damage.
I actually thought I did pretty good today, considering the terrain, this was just me loosing my footing while turning around.... dumb-ass....

Image

We were lucky, as soon as we got to the paved road it started to pour. Raining hard for about an hour, we continued to ride, heading East.
Since all the normal campgrounds are full, and we hadn't showered in days ( just a river swim, no services at the Delaware Rec Area ), so we're at a hotel in Searcy AR.
On the way here we met a guy at a gas station who was talking about how he has a '82 BMW that he rode 215,000 miles without doing anything to it but change the oil and put gas in it. He said that a dealer bought it back from him for what he paid for it and put it on display. Was a cool story, maybe you had to be there...

Tomorrow we're heading into Tennessee, heading north-east.

Will continue soon....

For the life of me I can't think of a single thing to say about the way you go touring and camping.

Hang on - Maybe 'inspiring', or 'crazy', or 'fantastic', or .............. what?

Top report again ChiTown. You certainly get out into the countryside - DEEP into the countryside.

Now tell us - WHY didn't you buy a GS?

Cheers mate - Mick.

Wow, what a trip. Thanks for posting it.

There is a show on the discovery channel where they drop a guy off in the wilderness for 7 days with no food or water, just a multi-tool and cameras and he films his survival. Are you that guy on vacation?

I think SurvivorChi avoided the GS to prevent himself from riding through the Amazon.

Great trip report!

Do NOT get a GS. Had you been on a GS on this trip, we would have been looking at pictures of someone winching it out of a river.

I'm looking forward to reading your trip report at home tonight, where I can give it more time.

Thanks!

I loved this report! That's the kind of bike camping I would love to do. However, I don't fish, so the next time you go please invite me along to eat some of that delicious looking fresh-caught fish!

Thanks for the report and the pics. These places have potential for a future Bash! :o

ObiWanKan-ChiTown, I have a question.
Do you have to get a fishing license for every state you ride to?

Where was I?

Here's where we ate BBQ in Memphis, on Beale street

Image

Nashville

Image

A friends house south of Knoxville we stayed at, it was nice to sleep in a bed after this 600+ mile day.

Image

The next day we set out to ride Deals Gap, then jump on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and head North.

Deals Gap Motorcycle resort

I'm a little lighter after grinding my center-stand down riding The Dragon. :D

Image

Dam

Image

Image

A picnic on the Parkway, aaawwww.

Image

Image

Image

One of many tunnels' on the BRP. I was surprised to see so many bicyclists riding the BRP, with no reflectors and wearing black. They were invisible in the tunnels...

Image

Image

Image

Traffic was good, the only annoying thing was all the goldwings going 40 mph, then braking for sweeping corners! Goldwings are on my list with RV's.

Image

This is somewhere south of Mt. Mitchell, again we were able to watch a thunderstorm come in from a mountain top.

Image

Image

Image

Image

We ended up camping at Linville Falls campground, on the BRP. Great spot, did a little fishing ( nothing ) and hung out with a interesting couple who where camping near by. The guy was a Greek orthodox priest, and the girl had just broke her foot while on this trip. I ended up cooking hot dogs and brownies for all of us.

Image

Image

It finally was in the upper 50's at night, very comfy. It was acually the first time I've slept in my sleeping bag this trip.

This morning we headed towards Hickory NC to get my overdue service done at Extreme BMW, to find out that it's out of business. Shoot.
I then called up Carolina BMW in Greensboro NC and asked if I could get some service done, Richard then told me they we're booked up through the end of June.
I explained my situation and asked if he could help me in any way. He put me on hold and came back to say that, yes they would accommodate me and get on on over here so they could start.
100 miles later I'm here, they got my bike right in, putting big fans on it, and buying us lunch while we wait. Awesome dealer. I feel right at home.

So now I'm waiting, ready to head north some more, hoping to make it up near Roanoke today.
:D

Yes I do, and a trout permit in some states. Usually I buy a 7 or 10 day license.

After Carolina BMW finished the service we set out towards Roanoke in a blistering 95ºF around 4 PM.

Image

The heat must have been getting to me, I was having a hard time concentrating and was thinking that I should find somewhere to stop soon when I realized there was a cop with his lights on behind me! poo.
A North Carolina state trooper had pulled me over and and asked me why I was going so fast. Honestly I didn't know, I felt real tired. He told me I was going 86 mph, and asked again why the hell I was going to fast. The speed limit was 60, I was on a 4 lane dived highway. poo. I really didn't mean to be going that fast, I had my throttle lock on and was going down a hill......... He then told me that he's supposed to take me to jail for this offense in NC, but then he said he would give me a break and only write me a ticket with a mandatory appearance in court in July.
At first the thought of me going to jail and them "towing" my bike away by putting chains around it and hoisting it with a boom..... then I thought, if you really want to give me a break, then just let me go, and don't make me come here in the summer.
So I got a ticket, and will be back in NC July 19th. Really, the guy did helped me because I was going too fast, especially with a passenger, and in this heat... sure.
After the ticket I was pissed that I didn't at least get a picture of the Trooper with the bike. He didn't seem like he would have liked that anyway I guess.

Right after the ticket we crossed into Virginia, stopped and cooled off.

The sun was going down and I looked for a place to camp. I was going to go to State Park on a Lake 40 miles south of Roanoke, so we stopped for groceries, then as I got closer realized that the temp was going up. We were going to a lower elevation, stupid me, of course a lake will be lower. It was still 90º at 7:30 PM, when we were only 10 miles away, I decided to keep going and try to get close to the BRP and in higher elevations, cooler temps. I hate riding at sunset, I know the deer in this area are plentiful and very dangerous. So I found a "mountain" view campground with my Garmin and set off. 38 miles, 30 minutes till dusk. poo.

Image

When we arrived it was dark, and it turns out there's no campground, just a new subdivision. poo.
Lindsay was being a trooper, but had been obviously miserable for some time. I have mesh, she wears a First Gear jacket, with vents. I had taken a nice cold river bath in the moonlight the night before, she hadn't showered in 2.5 days. She wanted to go to a hotel, but that didn't happen.
Who said a "adventure" was supposed to be all good.:1drink

I then jumped on the BRP, thrilled to be riding it at night. :huh and headed towards The Roanoke Mountain campground, about 15 miles south.
Turned out to be a nice night, the campground was empty, and the spots were beautiful. There were no showers, like all BRP campgrounds, but one of the water spouts was right behind our site so we took birdbaths, found some firewood, had some cold drinks, and things were good again.

Image

We were quite content with out site, happy to be relaxing when a car drives up, looking like they were looking for a camp spot. But they keep going. Wait, here they come again. Ok yes there you go, keep going...... gone.
The third time they came around they pulled into the spot right next to us! Empty campground! I'm sorry but where I'm from that's rude. I wasn't going to let it go this time, as soon as they turned off the car I said" are you really going to camp right here when the campgrounds empty?" I didn't let them reply, " if you are, I'll guess I'll move, we would like some peace and quiet." she replied, "we're just a couple of girls and want to be next to someone".:killen I said, "well, you can go over there and still be in shouting distance, if that makes you feel better". They got in the car and left. I guess I might have been rude, but for hoot's sake. That never happened while I was out solo.....

The next morning we set out heading towards Shenandoah NP, with only 100 n' some miles, we weren't in a hurry. I was hoping to ride some fire roads on the way....
Image

The little guy was sunning himself right after a tight turn, so I went back and "helped" him off the Parkway. I'd imagine it would be bad to hit him while leaned way over... good thing I wasn't speeding!

Image

The first of many deer
Image

I was ready for some more minor roads, so we jumped off the parkway in a few places to explore. This would be in VA.
Image

On this road I turned the engine off and coasted down for about 15 minutes. It was pretty cool to ride with no engine noise.

This was crazy steep!

My favorite road shot, thanks Lindsay.

We stopped on the side of the road when we saw the bear. There was a little blond cub running around, but I didn't get a shot of it. Very neat to see.

We found a nice spot right on the Appalachian Trail at Big Meadows in Shenandoah NP.

Image

How I transport firewood and ice from the one nearby store.
Image

Great to be in the region where I can get my favorite beer!
This was going to be our last night on the trip, I had to get home.
Image

We took a hike on the Appalachian Trail, as nice as it was all I could think about was how fun it would be on a dirt bike.

Image

Image

These two lead the way down the trail for about 15 minute, keeping a nice mellow pace. It was real cool to watch them, they just ignored us.

Image

Image

It was a slightly different feeling seeing this one. Not by the road with others around, or with full gear and a helmet. He was about 50 yards away.

Image

Image

I put the Manypause Motorcycle Club knife to good use, trying out some local Virginia wine.

Packing up in the morning.

726 miles home, and it was going to be hot. Still better than being a lot of other places. :D

These Conti-Attacks sure are sticky.
Image

As promised it was hot. In Maryland we went through a thunderstorm, the temp dropped from 93 to 68 in minutes. It felt so good, we didn't even bother with rain-gear.:1drink The rest of the day I prayed for rain, but that would be it.

Image

NW Indiana, 130 miles left.

Image

Home safe!

Image

The next morning, back in the Hood. I was outside giving everything a good cleaning, tent, bike, fishing gear, etc.

120 MPT he says.

Tlaloc wrote:What a wonderful ride report--thanks!

I'm about to take two week trip down to Utah and Arizona. I'll camp and motel it. I've done one weekend trip previously and am a little concerned about getting what I need on the bike. I see you rode two up for a significant camping trip.

I've got small, packable camping gear, but some bulky items like hiking boots. I'm thinking I should be minimal on clothing, just the essentials.

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,

Words of wisdom.... I'll do my best.
Generally I've found that you never are far from a wal-mart anywhere, so pack light, you can always get what you need. With that said be sure to leave some space for the unknowns, and just bring the things you wouldn't find at wal-mart. Also, unless your planning on some real heavy duty hiking I wouldn't bring hiking boots, they take up so much space. If you must I would get a water proof bag and strap them somewhere on the outside, saving your precious hard bags space for other essentials. Riding boots that are comfy to walk in work for me, ( Rev'It Ergo ) and I only bring some Merrill water shoes for camp shoes, and light hiking. They take little space, dry fast ( about 15 minute placed next to a fire) , and are comfy with no socks on.
Check out http://www.helen2wheels.com for some great packing advice, and gear. Also check out
http://www.cyclebahn.com/motorcycle-overland/index.html
Lorne is the guy that inspired me to start 2-up camping to begin with, and has a great packing system down. He's the king of long 2-up camping trips.
Also check out http://www.advrider.com a wealth of bike travel info.

Only bring the essentials, leave some room for expansion, bring 1 extra waterpfoof bag with nothing in it and what you need to strap it to the bike, I've found this extra bag to be very useful at times, and take lots of pics!
Good luck, and feel free to hit me back! :D
