Convince me to switch

Post by Dauntless »

I want to get an R1200R but I like my R1150R just fine. Do the mirrors on the new bikes vibrate or is the engine dramatically smoother? Is the new bike much more agile? What do you like about the new bike that would make an R1150R owner want to switch?

Less weight, more horses, better looks(imo and only if you get a black one  ), the best brakes ever with ABS and very very comfy. Just ride one and I'm quite sure you realy wanna switch after that. Due to the lighter weight, more hp and agility a very fun bike to ride that can do touring but also good for carving up some back roads.

mirrors

Post by hankth »

Yes, the mirrors do vibrate. My R1150RT mirrors were always clear. I have been wondering if the accessory mirrors are any better. Anyone have them? This is only a small annoyance for me though, and I'm not sure I would want to pay for the switch. The acc. mirrors are also rectangular which I perfer over round.

I have 8000 miles on my 5 week old 1200R, and I can't get enough.

1. yes it is much more agile. I never got rid of the chicken-strips on my 1150R, the 1200R is confidence inspiring. (did i say that right?)

2. EVERYTHING about the bike is better, except the payment.

Much, much faster, better brakes, better headlight, much better hard cases, smoother engine, much smoother transmission, love the digital gauges oh forget it, you get the picture.

I truly hope you wouldn't base your purchase decision on how the mirrors work, they work just fine, but seem pretty low on the "why to buy list" to me.

Just go test ride one, but only if you're ready to buy because you're 1150 won't feel the same after driving the 1200.

Someone around here made a comparison that sticks with me, something like this:
1150R = strong, sturdy, reliable Bavarian women
1200R = 20 year old athletic cheerleader

The 1150 is obviously a very fine motorcycle, but it never made me want to push it's limits necessarily. Fun, steady, comfortable, flickable, yes.
When I grind the pegs in a corner, or ride it through 6 states in a day, or take it fully loaded, 2-up on some mountain fire roads through rivers, I feel that it's just looking back at me saying, " is that all you got?"

You already know you're going to buy one, if you're asking why you should.
If the price tag won't take any food off you're table, you only live once.

It's getting ready to rain, I'm going for a ride. :)

Mr. Dountless,

I like the vibration that moves the mirrors and tank a little at idle. You should know, if you haven't riden one, that it's not the kind of filling loosening vibe you would experience with, say, a vintage British twin, but you know you got an engine down there. You got some ponies working.

The alternative is the personality-less perfection machines. I rode a 80's BMW K bike once that that was so smooth that it was like riding a big scooter.

Feeling the engine is part of the multi-sensory experience of riding. At least for me.

My mirrors vibrate at 4k on the tach, but they're clear below/above. Solution: Don't go 75mph in 6th...do 80 :-)

Mine vibrate quite a bit at speed. I've gotten into the habit of rolling off the throttle just a bit right before I do my regular mirror check. I like the looks of the accessory mirrors. I might pick up a pair, whether they reduce vibration or not.

Complacency is a sin. Take a test ride. Buy the bike.

Okay, I'm convinced. Now I have to find one without all of the gizmos. I wish they came in Cobalt Blue like on the Yamaha FZ1.

When I bought mine (black with the additional speed boosting pinstripes) I asked the dealer for alternate colors. I am coiming off of a 2000 R1100RT in Opal Blue. Loved the distinct color.

The dealer told me in the U.S. market I am the minority. Clearly I am not the minority among those in this forum. The dealer went on to say the majority of the U.S. wants black and other basic colors. I took that to mean that BMW continues their drive for mainstream acceptance to broaden their riding demographic.

Hey, if we have to have limited color options so BMW can push on and keep building us those freaky looking bikes we seem to love....oh well...let it be.

I got a good deal on a brand new black R1200R. The dealer still has to put it together so I might have it in a week or so.

I got one with ABS, heated grips, sport shield, centerstand, computer, ,low seat and chrome muffler. I didn't want the computer and chrome muffler so they didn't charge me for it. Before taxes, delivery charge, and other stupid charges it was $13,750.00

Sounds good almost the same stuff as I have on mine except for the low seat and the chrome muffler. I also have clear turnsignals and replaced the endcan by a Bos cf one. I actualy think the bike is nicer to rde without the sportscreen but in the winter the sportscreen keeps me a bit warmer and gives some protection from nasty weather. Wish prices over here where that good  and to think they make them in a country next doors to ours...stupid taxes.
