I think it is in very bad taste and understand why some people may find it offensive. If it could be found only under a specific post, I would say it doesn't matter. However, since we have to look at it every time you post a reply, I say it is better to remove it. There are so many pictures of nice things, not sure why you would want this.

Actually it doesn't offend me, but I voted "don't know what it is" because I seriously didn't for the longest time.

But I could see where someone with a 15" monitor might have a problem with it- I mean- if it was a quarter of your screen! Ouch.

I found it intriguing, as I wasn't quite sure what it was, and was too shy to ask.

I believe you asked for peoples opinion. I have to wonder why a person would use an avatar that they thought may be objectionable, and then later start a thread about it. So now you have a person that doesn't like it and a few that think it's not such a good idea. Now what?
Or is it that the snow is still piled deep around your garage and you can't get your bike out?

You are correct sir..I did ask for opinions. I do not, and did not think my avatar was/is objectionable. If you go back and read the ENTIRE thread, you will see that I started this thread because it was brought to my attention that someone may have found it to be objectionable..and YES there is still snow here . Now what? Well...not sure...lemme think about it and get back to you.

As for at work or kids looking... kids and adults have moved on.. most kids have seen/ displayed more than i would have ever in my day... and i'm only 41
it's amazing what kids know and have done these days.

But we do have some older folk than are.. well shall we say... older... that have a little trouble moving with the times and of course there are laws that this site and other places have to abide by.

Johnny, you already knew it was offensive to some people. That is why you asked the question. Whether they should be offended or not is not really the question. Their offense is probably not stirred up from something evil within them, it is probably stirred by situations or circumstances surrounding them when trying to view the forum. So It now comes down to What Should Johnny Do About His Avatar.

There is a valid point with children. Besides the fact that young kids don't typically see pictures of men's butts, they also don't want to imagine something so horrible happening to their father either. How about writing a report, telling us how the accident happened, what gear you were/were not wearing, the results of the accident, what recovery was like and with a warning about the dangers of riding? Post all the pics you want to show in the thread. But put a disclaimer in the title so that those who don't want to look at gruesome accident photos will know ahead of time. Then - voila - you get to post your pictures and explain and warn us about AGATT and no one is offended. It's an easy win/win.

What do you lose if you just remove it and 'be at peace' with others. What gain is there in stirring things up, whether you have a right to use the avatar or not. It doesn't cost you anything to remove the avatar and replace it with something that can be seen in office environments or shared with young children. It doesn't even cost you your right to use it. You still have the right. You don't lose that. You just choose to do the mature and peaceable thing, and replace it. Often in situations kind of similar to this, I have to finally say to myself "Okay, an impasse. Someone has to step up and be the mature, unselfish and humble one here. I choose to let it be me." It has worked well. Amazingly - by laying down rights, you rise above those who would request it.

No one is going to think you gave into pressure. I would imagine they would think you just had some fun, but then decided to take the higher road of respect and withhold your right for the good and wishes of others. That's not a bad way to live, you know. You lose nothing in being considerate of others' feelings. You do not become less of a person. You become more.

I'm not advocating laying down all rights - just those that don't really matter in the big scheme of life ......... like an avatar picture. And if they were asking you to remove it for some unjust gain on their own part, then that would be different as well. But I think it is just a matter of what their circumstances are at work and home probably. (I could be wrong about that, since I don't know what they said to you. I do tend to trust before I doubt or accuse.)

It's a strange and unflattering choice from the literally millions of pics available.

I was wondering if maybe it was part of the process of getting a custom seat made---they ink you up, you sit on a surface and they make the seat according to the pattern. I can't hold my breath any longeeer! Please tell us.

I have never even thought about the avatar being offensive, people keep saying that because I started a thread, that I knew it would be considered offensive. I've had the avatar since joining the board, and didnt really think twice about it. Apparently neither did a majority of the people here. I only started this thread AFTER I was asked by the powers that be(no names ) if I would consider changing it because someone thought it was offensive. To be honest with all of you, I don't really care what avatar I use. One thing for sure though, when you see it, you know exactly who is posting(yeah, yeah, associate the purple butt with johnnyjs1). I am sure almost everyone has thought "Whats the story behind that?"(no pun intended). I have told a few members who have genuinely been curious about it. So...like I said, Avatar or no Avatar, it really doesnt matter to me, but if even one person is offended then maybe it should be changed. I mainly started this thread because I am an instigator and antagonizer and also to get to know some of the members and their thoughts and views. I'm gonna need something to talk about at the BASH in may arent I? Thanks everyone for your input, votes and comments. I like this site because it's about bikes & is populated by mature, knowledgeable, amusing, generous & friendly folks from all over the world with interesting stories & questions to share. There's little (if any) animosity & generally you know what you're going to get most times you log on.

I'm sorry you hurt your butt, but I don't want to see a picture of it, unless perhaps it's in an accident report thread. It's not offensive per se, just un-necessary.

I agree totally with you Johnny! And that is why I included the below paragraph in my post. Relationships are a tad different than government though. Just a tad - maybe only a nano tad, but still different.
