One big factor to consider with respect to shock life is how you ride and where you ride. Here in Florida with mostly flat roads in good shape shocks last quite a long time. In the Northeast with a lot more opportunities to ride the twisties and usually deal with bumpier roads, shocks probably play a bigger part in ride satisfaction. The broad fast sweepers found out west offer still another variable and a different result. Add to that individual riding style and sensitivity and the equation gets more complicated still. It has been my experience that tire wear is more obvious than shock wear. When I lived in New England, stock shocks were noticeably worn before 20,000 miles, but here in Florida the shocks are still acceptable even over 25,000 miles.
