sorry to heard that, DJ. glad that you were ok. it is really painful to see those pictures...
everytime I found myself too relax or mind trip to other place while I ride, I chew myself out and make sure I stay focus. I know there's ond day will be my turn and I will definitely learn from your positive attitude.
hope you and R well.

I'm glad you are okay and certainly glad you let us know about it. It was a good reminder that this kind of thing or worse can happen to any one of us at any time. And a good reminder to wear protective gear (which I am still tyring to gather). I hope you get your bike back soon and that it runs just as good as before and that it takes you on some more of those awesome rides in Australia so we can all enjoy the scenes. We will miss your ride reports in the meantime.

DJ,
just read the post. Thank goodness you are ok and so is the cyclist. We all try to be careful but it goes to show how these things can catch you out. The main thing is you are ok and the bike can easily be fixed. The photos suggest the damage is fairly superficial. These are very tough bikes.
I remember dropping my first 1100R at a very steep road junction when it stalled. It rolled right over onto it's cylinder heads while I was thrown down the hill! The bike kept running for a short time before I managed to get on my feet and switch it off. The bike just shrugged it off. My pride took a little longer to recover.
There is something in the post to cheer you up!

That's terrible DJ.
I'm glad you are okay though, the bike, as you know can be fixed. Just so I know, and for my own safety, et.el, what safety gear did you have on?
Also, are you able to analyze what you did right, and what you didn't do so right? I know it happens very quickly, but some details could end up saving someones life if caught in the same situation.
You were only wearing jeans down below and all you have is a sore hip? Wow, here I was thinking you had on full leathers.

Thanks guys..it's nice to read everyones kind words..it's now the next morning..and I'm feeling fine.
Hopefully in a week or two and I'll be back on my bike again..I was tempted not to post about my fall because I was very embarrassed.
I hear about tram line crashes all the time and I thought it was just a case of not paying enough attention...and that'll not happen to me.
Thanks again everyone.

DJ,
I'm sorry it had to happen and glad it turned out okay for all. Thank you for the vicarious lesson. You are an invaluable contributor to this board for your insights, information, great ride documentation, and humor; and now for your humility and generosity in sharing what we all know is a tough thing to go through. Best of luck in your mechanical and psychic recovery.

Yo, DJ,
Man that's terrible! Speedy recovery to you.
Tracks are soooo dangerous....I used to commute by bicycle to a downtown hospital --when New Orleans had a downtown. On Aug 15, 1980 it rained--summer afternoon thundershower. It was sunny now and things were drying out. I rode over the train tracks (diagonal to the road) I crossed everyday, very carefully and slowly. I remember thinking that my front tire made it over fine and then an immeasureable moment later I was on the ground in the worst pain I ever had, even to this day. My rear tire had grooved in the track and flipped me down hard on my left shoulder. Fractured humerus about 3 inches down from the shoulder and the broken bit of the humerus was pulled out of the shoulder joint. My bike was fine, just a few scratches. Reading your description reminded me of that day and how you can be conscious of the danger of a situation, know the potential for disaster, try to take the correct steps, and STILL get hurt.
90 degrees is the only way to go.
Take care and keep us posted on your progress.
John

Hey DJ - You're definitely one of the most highly regarded members here. I'm definitely sorry to hear you went down, but am glad as heck you made out okay all things considered.
Here's a bright side: Time for the R1200R?
Sorry, I know how special my R1150R is to me, so perhaps you can have two loves in your life...

Too right!! Glad that you weren't hurt in the slip-up (or down??)
This goes to show how important it is to dress for the occasion. This makes me feel better in those times when I get funny looks for wearing a jacket and gloves in the Florida summer heat!!

Hi DJ,
Sorry to hear about your crash. Ouch!!!!
It looks like your town has the same problem as Toronto with all the darn streetcar tracks running parallel to the road and on the road.
I did a slide on them once also but got off lighter than you did.
Speedy recovery and repairs. Thanks for the tip on the locking oil cap....seems to work well.
