Thanks mogu83 , So this is for the 1200GS? If so and armed with the part # and all I could order it on line. Does anyone have any recomendations as to who ships quickly and has good prices?

If you insist.
I usually order from BoBs BMW. I live in Jersey and if I order before 10AM the package usually gets here the next day in the afternoon. Tell them what your doing, sometimes they have suggestions that can help. When I order my handguards, I'll order them from Bob.

Don , I feel soooo dumb to just be figureing this out but I bought YOUR old 1150 handguards.
"Mark - I also had the R1150GS handguards from my R1150RS - and there was no way to mount them on the Roadster that I could find that would look "right" - so I sold them (got $60 or so) and bought the ones for the R1200GS. Seemed simpler and quicker to do it this way then try to cobble something up. The R1200GS ones look like they belong on the bike."
Well duh! I'm glad money grows on trees. I just wish it would rain more.

Follow up:
I ordered the kit from Bobs BMW and had it in two days.
I was able to use the supplied washers by grinding (milling) down the back side till only the shoulder that fit into the handguard was left.
I used a nylon bushing (1/2"L, 1/2"OD, 5/16"ID) over the 8mm bolt, it should extend about 1/16" beyond the supplied washer (may have to grind some off)
Use a 8mm 'large head' bolt, stainless if you can get it.
Found stuff in the local hardwear store.
Bolt it together. the bolt will squish the nylon bushing to tighten everything up and the head is large enough to cover the 12mm hole in the washer.

Harry - you got two of the aluminum washers in your kit? I only got one and one bolt..

Page 3 in the instruction book that came with the kit shows:
Bushe 2 Stuck
I'm assuming you ordered the kit and not individual parts.
Both were in the bag with the hardware.
Look on the floor under your tool cabinet, that's were stuff usually hides on me.

Apparently Hans must have had an off day when he packed mine - only one washer.. and one bolt.
Go figure. Didn't use them anyway..

Here's the answer to the GS hand guard quandary.
Looks better than the large head bolts and the fender washers IMHO.
They look RIGHT and bolt right in - no worries.

The bolts are stainless and you can order them from:
http://www.mcmaster.com/
Part number: 92125A296
You have to order 10 for around $1 each or PM me and I'll send you a couple for $1 @ plus postage as I now have 8 extras.

Got me - but that's a great source for hardware. If you can imagine it they have it from bearings to steel beams. The site isn't easy to move around in but they have a lot of stuff and will sell relatively small quantities to retail customers. I really hate to cobble something onto my bike, with a little effort and the right parts you can make it look almost factory.

Hi all, I'm thinking of fitting the GS hand guards before the winter arrives and have been reading the threads on the subject. I wonder - does anyone know if the GS bar end weights will fit the R and would this mean the kit could fit straight on without the need to seek out new bolts and washers?

The bar end weights are held on with the bolts - so the different size bolt would still be needed.

Don
Thanks for the reply. Compared to the R, are the GS bolts different in length and head shape only or is the thread size different as well?

Oops - silly me. The R has M8 and the GS M12 bolts and they are different lengths. So I am thinking of using GS bar end weights and obtaining some 45mm long M8 bolts with countersunk heads to attach the hand guards. Any idea if this will work? Do the bolts need to be torqued in and loctited? On my old RT the torque setting for the bar end bolts was 21 Nm which always seemed a lot to me.

I don't know if any one else has had this epiphany or not ..But when installing my hand guards & pondering the handle bar end issue I looked @ all the good 411 here & thought if I could mill /machine the aliminum end caps it would look spiffy-er ...Opps forgot I dont' have a machine shop in the garden shed/work shop , but I've got a pant load o hand tools!!Soooo ..I took the allum end cap put it on a wood bench w/unwanted boss side facing up then using 4, 3/4" sheet rock screws screwed it down catching the outer edges of the end cap w/the screwheads Ya know @ 12-3-6 & 9oclock pos. Now it's secure to the bench !!! & cant excape ..got out my el-cheapo 4" grinder w/metal disc & went at it ,wearing glasses n being carefull ..Got it to "jus right " in about 2min. I had to do some hand de-burrung w/a file around the edge where it shroomed a bit & clean the ctr. hole but it fits xlnt ...If ya don't have a small high speed grinder ya could use a dremel (w/milling bit ) or a hand file (that would be @ least a 6pack job) .. much to my supprise local hom imp. ctr. had stainless counter sunk allen head fasteners in stock ..I'd love to post pic's but don't got the tech.Happy wrenching

Did the same thing, but grasping the end cap with smooth vice grips applied with minimal force and gently putting it against the flat portion of my belt sander sitting on its side on the garage floor.
Your method sounds a lot safer and offers more control.
I REALLY miss the Bridgeport mill!
