Pin Stripes

I washed and waxed my bike tonight. After the job was done, I got a lawn chair and a Labatts and gazed fondly at it for some time.

I had passed on the pin stripes option when I ordered it. The angular design didn't appeal to me (although they look better in photos of real bikes than in the production shots).

However, tonight, I saw how a pinstrip could be put around the outside of the tank much like the vintage R's. It would have to go in that little area above the upper indentation and then follow the shape of the edge of the tank all the way around. Of course, it would have to be the classic double thick and thin stripe and the R1200R graphic would have to be removed. Can anyone else visualize this, or should I scrap the idea?

On an unrelated note, the plastic seat mechanism and license holder is a monstrosity and does nothing for the appearance of the bike. Hope someone comes up with a smaller, cleaner aftermarket option.

Hey there's retro and there's RETRO
I think all R bikes look best in black but the pinstripes are too much.

Now if BMW sold a wood panelling decal for my panniers I could be pursuaded to turn my R1150R into a "woody"

I say GO FOR IT!

Below are a couple examples of what I did with to my Bonneville with inexpensive Pinstripe tape in one hand and a beer in the other. Seriously, if it looks good you KEEP IT there, and wax over it; it'll last for a loooong time. If you don't like it, you pull it off and try another angle/approach/pattern. I'm with you on the notion of white pinstripe (on a black paint job) as retro. It's what MY earliest BMW memories are, not the older classics.....

Richard, I was thinking the same thing. I think a pin stripe along the lines you suggested would accent the angles of the tank nicely, both highlighting the F4ish dimensions and adding the "classic" beemer look. It's definitely in the works. I'm gonna try to photoshop some stuff this weekend to get ideas.

+1 on the tail assembly. There's another post with a link to a cleaner option.
