Strange noise at the first start of the day

Dear R Friends,

I finally did it. I bought a 2004 1150R(19k on it) about a month ago. I absolutely love it!! One question: the bike makes what I think is an odd squeal or high pitched rattle at first morning startup. It goes away immediately. The bike is garage kept and it is summer here in central Ohio so the temp isn't below 60 F at night. The bike has plenty of oil (I haven't changed it yet) and runs great. I've only had Japanese inline 4's prior to this and none of them made any sound like this. Maybe I am just being neurotic :)

Should I take it in to have the dealership check it out?? Any thought will be appreciated.

Thanks,
j

Check the alternator belt for proper tension.

Hey j, ...Congrats on the new bike...and welcome.

My bike makes that noise sometimes...It may be one of those "They all do that things"...BWS's do funny things..

The squeal is probably the alternator belt needing adjustment. The rattle is probably the cam chain tensioner. There are threads about both ongoing from time to time. And there are 'fixes', especially for the belt, that prolong the life of the component.

BUT it might also be the starter's sprang clutch. (And now I must await more knowledgeable folks to explain that one).

In any case three things are true:

1) not fatal to you or the bike
2) worth fixing, adjusting, replacing as circumstances dictate
3) They all do that!

Yes, the Boxer engine on BMW Oilheads is not your father's inline 4!

Congrats on a good bike purchase. Have fun and be safe.

Sorry for the late addition to the thread - have been busy planning a house removal (to a different country... !)

I had the first-start-of-the-day squeal at about 15K on my '03 - advice in a previous thread on this board led me to the starter.

Remove, spray with brake cleaner (much muck comes out) and (optional) add a little spray lubricant (careful - the clutch is very close!)

Squeal gone, and no problems in the months and thousand miles since.
