Adventure gas tank on an R1150R?

Anyone hear of anybody successfully putting an 1150GS Adventure gas tank on an R1150R?
What can you tell me about it?

The idea sounds good but I have no clue about it. Maybe DJ knows more about this subject…he tried lots of things on his bike.. :lol: :lol: :lol:

BMW of Santa Cruz told me that they couldn't tell without actually trying...the mechanics suspected that it could require minor frame mods.

Just that it ought to work, and it would increase range by about 50%. It ain't cheap, but less than buying a new (or used) GS Adventure and then trying to shorten it to fit my inseam.

It does sound like a good idea...If you like wide, fat, and top heavy..(not me)...but of course you would have to relocate the oil cooler.

I think the 1150R tank is one of the best parts of the bike..I wouldn't want to loose it..Not even for more fuel capacity.

Thanks for the feedback...Guess a seattop auxiliary tank and add-on petcock might work better for the few times I really need the extra range.

From one side I share you the pain that so often you must stop for filling the tank of the R1150R (in my case 200 KM which is almost 120 miles then I get the fuel lamp on). It is annoying and unpleasant. From the other side I think DJ is right, the nicest part of the R1150R is the beautiful gas tank. I was looking to the adventure, I think the things which make this bike looks nice is the combination of the Gas tank, front fender and the head lamp(s). I don’t believe it will be possible to put this combination on the R1150R. I think we just should accept it as it is! :roll:

If I ever get the urge to go adventuring out past my bikes range, I'll simply bungie a couple of those 2 gallon plastic containers to the top of my system cases. Unless youo're going to do this a lot, I think even the fuel cell is too much trouble to go to. The Iron Butt guys would have a lot of advice probably. I'l seen some pretty neat fuel cells on their bikes. (pictures of, I mean)

I actually saw a guy on the internet somewhere who bought a R1100R, decided the range was too short and had the tank modified. He ended up with a pretty good looking tank, I think the fabricator widened it about a gallon. It was a little fatter, but still looked llike an RR tank.

Extending Range

Here is a link to a great shop that specializes in custom modification of BMW bikes to extend their range. They are a great bunch of guys, reasonable (Independent BMW mechanics) and do all of the work on my bike. They might be able to set you up with a kit or at least give you some advice.

Do you really need the bigger tank--I mean REALLY?

I ride with some guys who have Adventures and PDs (R100GS Paris Dakar). Both those bikes hold several more gallons than mine. While they CAN go farther on a tank than me, it has never benefited them on our rides. They do get to gloat about not needing any gas while watching me fill my tank, but what good did the bigger tank do them if I have to stop? Also, my riding buddies have smaller bladders these days, and pee stops tend to determine how often we stop more than gas or food.

Even when crossing some pretty desolate area, like Hwy 50 in Nevada, you can make it across if you fill up beforehand. I really wonder if there are places in America where you can ride 200 miles without seeing a gas station. Now if I was riding from Paris to Dakar, then I would want the 8 gallon tank.

I rode through Baja a few months ago, and knowing there was a stretch of 200 mile without a gas station, I took along a 1 gallon gas can. Even then, we ran into more than one guy selling gas from the back of a pickup truck.

Like others have noted above, a 1 or 2 gallon gas can is a better idea IMHO, of course.
