1st Gear Issue

Post by Eddiem »

All

I picked up my bike from the dealer yesterday from getting the new QD's under the recall........and I had a problem, when I got out of the dealer and was getting ready to get on the freeway I tried to put the bike on 1st gear but it would not...I tried modulating the clutch and also reving it a little but all I got every time was the neutral light blining 2 times and no first gear.... .

I was able to put the bike in second gear no problem, at all every time, and was able to let go of the clutch and get moving....I stopped again and the tried again...same issue no 1st gear but again able to put the bike in second release the clutch with plenty of travel and was able to shift 3rd 4th etc...I stopped again and tried 2nd to 1st not good.... since I was able to put the bike in 2nd but and get going in second gear I don't think that this is an issue with the slave cylinder no???

After the bike warmed up and I really got going once of the freeway I was able to put the thing in 1st gear....but I'm concerned....

I've performed the usual maintenance, replaced gear and final drive oil with Valvoline 75W140 a few weeks ago less than 200 miles on it.....bled and replaced the fluid with DOT4 fluid....does anyone know what is going on here.....the bike has done this twice since picking up from the dealer......did not do it before.....but yet again I've only had the bike for a few weeks.

Anyone out there that may have experienced the same???

Aloha

If your bike is completely stopped when it won't go into first gear, then all you have to to is to roll it backward a small bit, with pressure on the shifter, and it should go into first gear. I think "they all do that."

On the other hand, if the bike is rolling forward at all when you're trying to downshift, it should go into first gear. (Although, it may "clunk" when doing so.)

Eddie,
With your bike WARM and in neutral at a stop, pull in (disengage) the clutch and count to three before shifting down to first. If the bike is cold and in neutral, pull in (disengage) the clutch and tap the shifter right away...don't wait.
Try that and get back to us.

Well, if you're spinning up the gearset in neutral, as your post seems to indicate, then it's not the "they all do that" problem. Does KeithC's fix work?

This is your new used bike, right???

It seems to me that you have been spending a lot of time bringing your current bike up to par. I hope you are having fun and learning at the same time.....otherwise it might be time to get that one traded and acquiring a new one.

It Worked

Post by Eddiem »

All

The 1st gear test stopping and rolling the bike back just a bit worked, no problems with the getting into 1st gear!

The part that I don't get is why when you select 2nd instead of 1st the bike just changes gears just fine??

What is the rolling doing, is it moving the drive shaft and the trany gears just a little bit so the dogs in the 1st gear match??

Interesting stuff...was not expecting that??
